Lacasso, Woodstock Academy is a public school. The Connecticut state government operates a profile of the school, something it doesn't do with private schools: http://www.csde.state.ct.us/public/der/ssp/dist0405/dist149.pdf - Also see http://www.greatschools.net/modperl/browse_school/ct/1104

Hi whispertome. Woodstock Academy is an independent school much like Norwich Free Academy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwich_Free_Academy Woodstock Academy is not run by a municipal government, but is governed entirely by a board of trustees. I'm a recent alum who currently volunteers at the school. The school takes great pride in its independent tradition and maintains them. Great benefits have come from maintaining an independent status.

Lacasso, we, in America, have a very, VERY clear-cut definition of "public." If the school is funded by local tax money, it is public. Full stop. Lacasso, I live in Texas. Out of ALL of the school districts in my state, ONE is controlled by a municipality (that's Stafford MSD) - The rest only answer to the state.

Also, according to your argument, charter schools would not be public. WhisperToMe 01:00, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Okay - the state department of education of Connecticut does not classify Woodstock as a private school.

CT lists its private schools here: http://www.csde.state.ct.us/public/csde/reports/Report.asp?intSectionID=16 - You will need ActiveX to view this.

Now, when the page loads, expand the "Nonpublic elementary...." on the left-hand side, and all private schools are listed by municipality. Woodstock lists the Hyde School, NOT Woodstock Academy. WhisperToMe 01:36, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Here is how I explained it

Okay, Lacasso, here is what I did:

"The school is not within any school district and is not controlled by any municipality; therefore it bills itself as an "independent school" [1]. The Connecticut State Department of Education does not list Woodstock in its list of non-public schools [2] and therefore considers Woodstock to be a "public school" because the state of Connecticut oversees the school [3]. Woodstock is a member of the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools [4]."

WhisperToMe 01:41, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Woodstock Academy is accredited by "The Connecticut Association of Independent Schools." The accreditation site lists Woodstock Academy among its members. The New England Association of Schools & Colleges, Inc. does not accredit Woodstock Academy as a public school, http://www.neasc.org/roster/psct.htm but rather as an independent school http://www.neasc.org/roster/cta.htm Not only is Woodstock Academy accredited as an independent school, but it is socially considered an independent school by its administrators, students, alumni and greater community.

Doesn't matter - the school falls under Connecticut state jurisdiction, i.e. it is public. In a way it is independent as it is not controlled by any Connecticut municipalities. In fact, this is EXACTLY what I said in here. All Texas ISDs are independent in that way too. I am making it clear that the school is technically a public school as it receives financial assistance and governing from the state, BUT in a way it is independent and it is often classified as an independent school by third parties.
