[edit] History
Labouré was founded in 1892 as the Carney Hospital Training School for Nurses, the first Catholic school of nursing in New England.[citation needed] There still exists a Carney Hospital in Dorchester, affiliated with Tufts Medical Center. In 1951, however, the school merged with two other schools operated by the Daughters of Charity, St. John's School of Nursing and St. Margaret's School of Nursing, to form the Catherine Labouré School of Nursing,[citation needed] named for Catherine Labouré. The institution was re-established in 1971 with associate degree-granting authority in nursing and allied health. In 2008, the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education gave the institution authority to grant the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Pending accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), it plans to admit its first RN-BSN class in 2009.[2] It was sponsored by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul until 1997,[3] and is now sponsored by Caritas Christi Health Care.[4]
