Kurup
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kurup is an occupational title among the Nairs of Kerala. Traditionally they were keepers of Kalaris or martial art schools in Kerala and served as warriors and generals to their King. A corresponding title is Panicker. The title of Kurup was also used by a class of Nairs who were employed as supervisors in temple and pagodas. Besides, both Panicker and Kurup are used as surnames of the Maarans of Central and South Travancore.
