[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:CDMS_parameter_space_2004.png

Thanks for uploading Image:CDMS_parameter_space_2004.png. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or ask for help at Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. Thank you. -- Carnildo 07:35, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyrights on Image:CDMS_parameter_space_2004.png

If you were paying a little more attention, you'd have noticed that a help desk page is liking to it. Here it is. Basically, the original image was a fair use graphical plot, and I traced it by hand using a vector editor and created a PNG version of it. As I pointed out, I was wondering if the person can actually copyright the scientific data presented on the graphic. As far as I can see, nobody should be able to (it'd be considered trivial work, there's no creative content on it). The only reason it was fair use is because the original image was created directly by someone else, so I thought I could release my version on the PD.

So I'm aware of the copyright, but I decided to leave it as unknown until someone clears this out for sure. ☢ Ҡieff 14:08, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm not a copyright lawyer, but I think your image can be released into the public domain. I'd be more comfortable if you'd re-created it from the original data rather than from an image. --Carnildo 08:42, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Picture of the Day

Hi Kieff,

Just to let you know that your photo Image:Gospers glider gun.gif is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on the 12th February. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/February 12, 2006. -- Solipsist 19:03, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

  • Great picture, indeed (even though it's not a photo, I guess :-) )... Thanks for making it! congratulations!! --BACbKA 09:13, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Maps

Hi Kieff.

I noticed the map you made for Pangaea a year and a half ago. Would you consider making similar maps for Columbia (supercontinent), Rodinia, and/or Pannotia? Maps would add greatly to each. You can find reference material from Christopher Scotese (e.g. [1]) if you're willing. Thanks a lot. bcasterlinetalk 20:40, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Searching for 3 movies

Thank for responding for my question:Searching for 3 movies. You have suggested the first movie might be Buddy and it defitely look like it. The other two movies apparently are Shocker and Split Second if you wish to know. I would really like to say thank you for being so nice and responding to my question. [edit] Incorrect normalization in Image:Synthesis square.gif

Hi, I noticed that you were the one who created this animation. Overall, it's a great illustration, but there is clearly an error in the normalization: the Fourier series must converge to the square wave, except at the point of discontinuity. In the image, your Fourier series is clearly converging to a square wave with a slightly smaller amplitude.

It looks like you chose the normalization so that the first harmonic has the same amplitude as the square wave, when actually the first harmonic should be slightly larger.

Can you please post a corrected plot? Thanks!

—Steven G. Johnson 19:06, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks. Klepacki's linking all his interviews on his site made it pretty easy apart from organizing the entire thing. So far, it's the only computer / video game industry featured biography. --Zeality 13:51, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your user logo

Hi, Kieff!

I really did make an effort to retain the representation of your user name you seemed to prefer, namely Ҡiff]]; but seemingly this was not appreciated (since you changed it). I'm fairly new to Wikipedia (though not to mathematics), whence I do not know quite what is comme il faut. Should I in general try to copy the 'user logo's, or should I tend to use simpler and easier to read forms? An advice would be appreciated! JoergenB 19:18, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] sines

I think your questions about other ways of generating waveforms with iterated sines interesting. I found an iterated FM waveform that is somewhat like a saw wave (but not as sharp), that you might want to look at.

F0(x) = sinx
Fi + 1(x) = sin(x + Fi(x))

But also this can be smoothly varied with a sine quite easily by attenuating the offset:

F0(x) = sinx
Fi + 1(x) = sin(x + cFi(x))

Which becomes a sine wave as c approaches zero, and becomes interestingly chaotic as c becomes greater than 1.

I'm thinking I could actually find an FM solution for a real saw wave (or an arbitrary wave), but I'll need some time to figure it out.

I also notice that you were interested in making a sin wave from square waves, which is an interesting idea. Ultimately, I believe it is impossible to do so in the manner you were attempting, but you asked then about the Fourier series, and whether it could work with things other than sine functions. Someone there mentioned that any "orthogonal basis" could be used, which isn't completely true. Harmonic square waves are orthogonal, but they're not a "complete orthogonal system" (in the Lebesgue sense). Basically, you need to be able to approximate any given continuous segment with your function, but with square waves this is impossible. You can approximate any given point, but in order to approximate a curve, you would need to introduce another square wave that puts a discontinuity in the middle of that approximated curve, and furthermore, any new wave you add that could better accomodate that curve adds new discontinuities. Anything that you can use for a fourier transform, on the other hand, can do so without the discontinuities. There are other ones than sin and cos; I've heard of a Fourier-Bessel series, and a Fourier-Legendre series, but I don't know offhand what they are used for. (Another way of looking at it is that sine and cosine have the relationship that any phase offest of a sine is equivalent to the sum of an appropriate sine and cosine. You can't do this with a square wave; there is no way to change the phase using just a square and a "cosquare".)

You could, however, make a sine wave out of an infinite number of square waves of the same period with variable phase and amplitude (or any function that repeates its first half in the second half as a negative), but this isn't any kind of Fourier series. (By combining a square wave with phase 0.1, with a negative square wave with phase 0.2, you get a pulse from 0.1 to 0.2, and its negative reflection in the second half of the cycle, with enough pulses in a fine enough interval, you can make any function with that same kind of symmetry).

I thought I'd offer a slightly different approximation to the sine using squares than yours. In this case I am still using the odd harmonics, but in this case,

\sin{x} \approx \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2} \sum_{n=1}^{\infty}{\frac{C_n S((2n-1)x)}{2n-1} }
Where S is the square wave function, and Cn is +1 or -1 depending on whether:
\sum_{m=1}^{n-1}{\frac{C_m}{(2m-1)}} < \frac{1}{(2n-1)}
C = + , − , − , − , − , − , − , + , − , − , + , − , + , − , + , − ...

In this way, I am trying to keep the total sum around the fixed zero points somewhere near zero (so essentially, I am trying to approximate the sine wave by using the usual 1/n odd harmonics, but also trying to keep the two areas around 0 and pi well behaved. It ends up looking like this:

Image:Squaring the sine.png

The bad areas around pi/2 and 3pi/2 don't really grow much more than that... I'm not sure if they'd tend to infinity, but I don't think so. At least, they get really, really insignificant after a while. If the C series is unreadable, think of it as a recurrance relationship:

C1 = 1
{sum}_1 = \frac{1}{1}
{sum}_n = {sum}_{n-1} + C_n \frac{1}{2n-1}
C_n = \begin{cases}1 & ( \frac{1}{2n-1} < sum_{n-1} ) \\
-1 & ( \frac{1}{2n-1} > sum_{n-1} ) \end{cases}

So, if sum keeps track of the amplitudes used so far, C determines whether the next amplitude should be added or subtracted to keep the sum closer to zero. - Rainwarrior 19:46, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Villarceau circles

Your animation for Villarceau circles is so striking, that I thought it would be really neat to nominiate it for consideration at FPC! :-) --HappyCamper 04:01, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Yup, I saw the new one but didn't think to voice an opinion. Is this good? :-) Anyway, I have been busy contacting all the people who voted on the previous image. It's nice to see them trickling back for support. --HappyCamper 14:40, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

One quibble is that I believe it might help if the inside surface of the torus is colored or textured so it is visibly distinct from the outside surface. --KSmrqT 08:18, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
What do you mean? Isn't green inside and blue outside good enough? :S They look very distinct to me. Also, I DID experiment with a different texture (hexagons, stripes and plain colors), but it looked pretty boring or ambiguous, so I used checkered pattern inside too. ☢ Ҡiff 08:53, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
(You can reply here; I'm watching.) Maybe it's a monitor/color-management thing, but I see little difference. In fact, I did not realize that different colors were used until you said so! Still, I supported its nomination as a FPC, where you can see the nice things I said. --KSmrqT 00:16, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Very nice and striking indeed ! One question/request: would it be possible to slow down the section action ? LouisBB 19:38, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] image requests

I vaguely remember you asking for suggestions for mathematical images to do a while back, so here are a couple of possibilities:

  1. Lakes of Wada could do with a picture (of the lakes of Wada).
  2. Wilkinson's polynomial could do with an animation of how the roots move in the complex plane as the coefficient of x^19 is changed.

R.e.b. 05:24, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

I found a crude picture of the lakes of Wada in J. G. Hocking, G. S. Young, Topology ISBN 0486656764 on page 144, but it's probably not that much use to you. An animation of the lakes growing day by day would be even better than a picture, but this may not be worth the effort, as it's a rather obscure topic. Some of the external links already have pictures of infinite spherical reflections, so a picture of this is not needed. R.e.b. 21:07, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

I tried to draw a crude image of the lakes for you, but got carried away and ended up with something good enough to add to the Lakes of Wada article. Though it could still be animated if you are short of things to do.... R.e.b. 16:12, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gimbal lock figure

A single gimbal mount can be a semicircle, rather than a full circle. This may simplify the figure and make the essential features easier to notice.

The essence of physical gimbal lock is that the inner and outer axes become aligned, so that the body is free to rotate around two independent axes, but no longer around three. The essence of mathematical gimbal lock is a topological problem, discussed in this thread from news:comp.graphics.algorithms. I assume you wish to illustrate the physical version.

An inability to rotate in a certain way is a tactile phenomenon, not a visual one. A static illustration could simply show the aligned situation that corresponds to lock. An animation might show the effect of wiggling each axis in turn in a configuration away from lock, and then contrast that with a locked configuration.

However, if you want to try the tactile idea, you might somehow depict torque magnitudes. --KSmrqT 08:05, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pi-unrolled

I created (and linked from FPC) a gallery of all versions of this graphic. I hope you won't take it the wrong way when I say that it's really messy to have four or five versions of an animation all on one page. I don't want to kick you off but would you consider taking out not only your version but also all previous versions, leaving only Image:Pi-unrolled-720.gif? The outcome of the nom seems certain and I'd rather not see it closed and archived with so much animation on the page. If you agree, I'll ask you to do the refactoring, please, to your taste. You're also welcome, as the creator, to edit the comment attached to your version in the gallery. Thank you. John Reid 21:58, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Pattonb.jpg

hi, can you take a look at Image:Pattonb.jpg and specify which tag it should be tagged with? It is a nice little improvement of an image and would make articles look better, but if there is no tag, then other users might remove it arbitrarily. I note that the previous user mentioned public domain. Can you throw some light on it since you've worked on the image, who has the copyrights now? Idleguy 07:12, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Graphics Lab

I saw your name listed on Wikiproject Illustration or the list of graphic artists, and I thought I'd let you know that a Graphics Lab has been created on EN. Based on the highly successful French and German graphics labs, it seeks to better organise and coordinate our graphic design and photo-editing efforts. Up until now, there has been no common space on EN where users could ask for maps, charts and other SVG files to be created. What's more, the Graphics Lab has discussion boards, tips, tools and links; in sum, a good common workspace. Come help us out! The infrastucture is already in place, and now we need participants. :) --Zantastik talk 02:09, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your signature

Just to let you know, I don't have some of the fancy fonts used in your signature, so everything you sign seems to start with a question mark, instead. This led to a misunderstanding on the Misc Ref Desk, where I thought you were unsure of your Sun Tsu answer, so added my own. If I'd known you were certain, I wouldn't have answered. Of course, fancy sigs also make edits messy, as those sigs often take up several lines of text. I can't tell you what you should or shouldn't put in your sig, but did want you to be aware of some of the issues, so you can "make an informed decision". Thanks, StuRat 15:54, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IMDb name template

Hi -

I noticed you listed your talk page as a place to ask for help with the {{imdb name}} template. I've made extensive revisions to the instructions; this is to ask two things:

  • Would you please review the instructions I've revised at Template:Imdb name/doc for accuracy and clarity?, and
  • Do you still want to be listed as a contact for people having problems with using the template?

I'll put your talk page on my watchlist; I'd prefer that you respond here to keep the dialogue in one place. Thanks.Chidom talk  19:31, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Brazilian Portuguese Hitchhiker's fan site?

Do you happen to have a working link? I saw the link on hhgttgonline.com, but I got a domain not found error, and not a working website. --JohnDBuell 18:42, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Well, first of all, I added the Brazilian Portuguese in that list because, as I understood, the paragraph was mentioning relevant websites from past and present.
That being said, no, I don't have a link. Not officially (but check my historical page of it). Milliways Brasil is dead. Since Milliways was the first and only DNA\HHGG website from Brazil and existed for a year with quite a few followers, I thought it qualified for the mention. I was the owner, by the way. When I was promoting the movie, the book and Douglas Adams around here, I even started a "Towel Campaign" in which people would attent to theaters with their towels (it included 42 good, humorous reasons to do so.) Back then, I was having at least 36 different Brazilian blogs linking to the website, plus some Orkut links. I think it was notable enough around here (considering the minimal fanbase we had back then), and I had a few official contacts, like the Brazilian Portuguese official book translator and the Brazilian distribution manager at Buena Vista International - who actually sent me 5 shiny Brazilian posters before anyone else. Given all this, I thought it qualified for the list (but I may be biased, of course), so I mentioned the Brazilian Portuguese language fansite on the list, even if it doesn't exist anymore.
Hope that clears everything up. In any case, I removed the mention since it looks like I misunderstood the paragraph anyway. — Kieff 20:01, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
Actually we could re-include that with a slight re-write. Wasn't there an Italian one for a while too? --JohnDBuell 21:38, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How to make animations

Hi Kieff,

I saw some of your animations. So far I have made a number of 2D-animations, such as the ones in the rotational-vibrational coupling article. I also have a website of my own, this article contains some of my attempts at semi-3D animations.

I would love to create animations for the mass flow meter article, animations that match or surpass the quality of the animations on the website of a manufacturer of mass flow meters, for example the curved tube mass flow meter animation.

I'd like to ask you if you can assist me with getting started with POV-ray. --Cleonis | Talk 15:57, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

[...]
Nice to see you're interested in POV-Ray, it's quite a nice program, especially for those into mathematics and programming. :)
The thing is, POV-Ray is a lot more low-level than most people realize. You have to get your hands in a lot of math to make things move nicely and look nicely, which is exciting and challenging. But since we're talking mostly about diagrams and models here, most animations won't be too complex.
[...]
Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask for further help! — Kieff 05:12, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
Generally, I want control over what the program does rather than extensive automation. For example, I write my website in HTML. Using a WYSIWYG editor doesn't suit my way of thinking around problems. So the fact that in using POV-ray I must get my hands in the math will suit me, I think.
Thank you for the descriptions you put up on my Talk page. If I get stuck I will seek your help. --Cleonis | Talk 16:09, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] POV-ray rocks!

Hi Kieff,

have a look at the animations in the mass flow meter article. I'm quite pleased with the results.
That type of mass flow metering is also called 'Coriolis flow metering'. I think the animations suggest that there is a connection between the operating principle of coriolis flow metering and gyroscopic precession. --Cleonis | Talk 22:15, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

well compared to most people in my family i have perhaps the best vision when it comes to a dark room. its quite weird to explain but i can see figures and shapes in a really dark room while my other family members cant. however when it comes to light i cannot stand being in it for too long. if i step outside in a sunny day i get dizzy sometimes. if there are to many lights on during night time i cannot stand to see a light turned on for a prolonged time. on computer screens or anything that reflects lights like the color you showed it just burns into me for a good 5 minuets. everytime i blink i see the image and well its quite annoying Maverick423 02:49, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your "prism" animation

Kieff, jeez you've got a tough crowd voting on your animation!! I don't know whether those who gave you an "oppose" vote are just trying to show off how they actually understand physics, or if they are really that tough to please. I've been criticized a bit too on my animation. No “oppose” votes yet (knock on wood). It's soooooo easy to do Monday morning quarterbacking isn't it? Well done. A very professional job. Greg L 04:32, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

  • I expanded the animation to 350 pixels. I think that will help. And as I posted in a comment in the voting section, I think you could save yourself a lot of work revising an already fine animation by simply crafting a well-thought-out, expanded caption. Greg L 20:25, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
    • This is now done. I wish someone would review it now, since my writing is probably a bit clunky. — Kieff | Talk 23:12, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
Where's the new caption wording? Greg L 00:05, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
How's this:
Here, time-chopped packets of white light consisting of the entire color spectrum enter a prism. Shorter wavelengths (blue and violet) travel slower in the glass medium than do longer wavelengths like red. Consequently, shorter wavelengths are refracted (bent) more than longer ones. This prism effect causes the light to disperse and fan out into a rainbow-like spectrum that separates the colors. For each packet of white light entering the prism, a color-smeared packet of light exits the prism. Because light travels slower in glass than in air, the packets necessarily bunch up inside the prism and only resume their normal speed (and spacing) after exiting it. A very brief flash of white light entering the prism will be “chirped” (smeared out over time based on frequency) after passing through a prism; red will arrive to an observer first, and violet last. This chirping effect can be seen when a column of colors, as they first diverge inside the prism, increasingly shears forward.

We had a bunch of questions before where some guy constantly asked if something was legal or illegal whether he was wearing a mask or not. After several of these questions, it was settled that any other "is it illegal ___ wearing a mask?" questions should be deleted on sight. If you're not that guy, well, sorry. Hi Kieff. I have seen the note you made today. I think this version of the graphic is also useful, but the white dots should have the same size as the colored ones (wrong idea of the model like this). It would be nice, if you could change that. It is not possible to just restore an older version because of the use of magenta. --Lucido 11:47, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Skyscraper Illustrations created with MS Paint

Hi,

My name is Stefan and thanks for your feedback at the MS Paint Page, I am the webmaster and owner and the illustrator of SkyScrapers.org, I was wondering if there could be a reason why you deleted my page/link? The drawings were really drawn with MS Paint - initially. Is it because there was a slight rendering with PhotoPaint? (Slight clouds and reflections)

P.S When I showed my projects/illustrations many did not believed it was drawn with MS Paint, I even anti-aliased the jagged pixel lines in MS Paint too. Those really took a long time. :-)

Hope to hear your feedback. Great discussion By the way. Drop me a reply or a discussion in my page too.

Thanks alot. ______________________________________________________________________________

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I'm definately fine with it! I can see you're busy too. There are a few things that I would like to clear up and verify it to you.

1. The files have to be slightly more compressed than usual becuase those will be uploaded into the Internet, and the use of less bandwidth is curcial. The original source files are drawn in bitmap.bmp in MS Paint, each of the .bmp file sizes are approximately 50 - 90mb. You can't judge quality just by looking at the previews, tried and tested, I wouldn't recommend GIF, as the colours are limited to 256 tones and people with the sharp eye will be able to spot some gradient dithering colours in rough "band-like" gradient. PNG will be like approximately 2.5 times larger than exported JPEGs and load longer in the Internet, even though they're in looped or interlaced loading patterns. They are then exported into EPS or TIFF for printing purposes or uses in various magazine/merchandise resources for the fullest quality. There is a technique to anti-alise in MS Paint, provided if you're ready to to do that patiently for a long time doing that procedure. All you have to do is to simply switch colours with the colour palette and change the RGB values gradually, pixel by pixel, till it matches to another colour. Repeat this step till 2 colour fades to another gradient - This process can take a long time. All you have to do next is to Mask out, copy and paste and repeat. However, I have also mentioned that I used Corel PhotoPaint to help anti-alised some areas more smoothly, and with the touch of clouds and rendering in my first post.

2. I understand and it's completely normal, yep. Seeing is beliving. People have approached me whether if this is for real and I'm fine with it. :-) I don't know how can I have ways of proving it to you that I initially draw them in MS Paint, (Unless If I have a video tutorial :-) ) you're just judging/looking because of its massive size and detail. If you look at the largest resolutions (Lagre Size) I did not drawn them in that scale, they are even slightly larger than that. So all I have to do is to resize them in Adobe Photoshop or Corel PhotoPaint and label them as large prints. I will never show the original dimensions of source to the public, as they are drawn in MS Paint. For it's massive size and detail, it's all the work of Copy and Paste, and each window detail could take up 2 weeks to draw proportionately to scale in MS Paint, pixel by pixel using the Pencil Tool. Most of these drawings sometimes even took nearly 6 month - to nearly one year to finish on MS Paint, before they are exported into any external image enhancement software for rendering. I hereby stand firmly that it is possible to draw any graphic regardless of difficulty, entirely on MS Paint.

3. I have absolutely no knowledge of Vector Graphics, I'm not fond of doing my work in Vector, as I find it hard to use, not accurate and a little cartoonish. However I once tried drawing on Vector, but it failed, as I tried to add many details to it, and my 3GB RAM, 256mb Graphics Card, 4.0 GHz Intel Core Duo PC couldn't handle that magnitude. So I had to abandon all hope of this.

In fact, many skyscraper websites (e.g. SkyscraperPage.com and SkyscraperCity.com) are requesting me to write a full length tutorial for them on how to use MS Paint without squandering hundreds of dollars on professional software.

I don't mind if my site is not on the external links, but I just write to make sure you and I understand about this and things are clear, honest and what it is.

Thanks, and have a great day ahead! :-) Hope to hear from you,

Regards and Honesty, Stefan

[edit] solar eclipse edit

Hello, Kieff, the picture you deleted is a composition of 2 original images that were taking in the same place at the same date but 2 hours apart. They both were processed in PS separately and then combined together by pasting one to another. So what is "fake" about it,Kieff? Or maybe because anonymus IP bandit vandalised my Summary page you came up with your edit Kieff? My goal was not to make the picture look real, my goal was to show an atmosphere of the event. If you look at the amphitheater, Kieff, you will see TV crews there. What do you think they were doing, Kieff? They were filming solar eclipse. So you deleted the picture and it is fine with me. I saw the eclipse and the amphitheater, most Wikipedia readers did not. I wanted to share my picture with Wikipedia readers, but I guess I cannot because you, Kieff, call my picture a "fake". Sure everybody could have an opinion. Some people could hate the picture, while others could like it, but you, Kieff, and others like you made an opinion for everybody yourself by deleting the picture. By the way I did few pictures like that with the different settings. Here's one picture that was selected by Anacortes Telescope & Wild Bird as a picture of the day. For this one I used my picture of a diamond ring to make a frame. So at least somebody likes my pictures that look like "fake". By the way how many total eclipses have you photographed yourself, Kieff? Best regards. Thanks for your contribution. I'm not looking forvard for getting your reply, Kieff, so please do not reply, better save your time for one more exiting edit. Mbz1 20:37, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Mbz1

Regardless of your wish to dismiss any discussion on the topic, I came here to do it anyway. My point in removing the picture from the article (I didn't delete it or anything) was that it didn't depict the actual effects of the total eclipse as someone would see it, but was in fact a photomanipulation of a real eclipse with another non-eclipse photo, and this was a bit disappointing. If you do have two pictures of that day, as you claim, taken a few hours apart, then you should just upload both of them in their original form and place them side by side withing the article , so we could all see the eclipse on all it's glory and compare it to moments before it happened, without any photomanipulation. THAT would have been a great addition to the article and the project. It was not my intention to discredit your efforts in any way, and I should have been more encouraging to upload the originals back then, but I made the edit at work and forgot about it once I got home. I apologize for that. I understand your disappointment, but there's no reason to take it so aggressively!
I humbly request you reconsider uploading the two original images you used, but upload them separately and let users compare them themselves. I'd be glad to have those in the article. It's just that photomanipulations are deceiving and must be used with great care to maintain encyclopedic value. Anyway, take care, and I hope you reconsider. — Kieff | Talk 21:25, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

You call it a photomanipulation. Yes it is. 2 original pictures were processed in PS (manipulation) and combined togetger (one more manipulation), or better yet I took eclipse picture from APOD and amphitiater picture from a travel site and combined both together and said I took it, or maybe (I forgot) I painted both of them(I wish I could paint), and I've never been to Turkey and I've never seen a solar eclipse. I'm not going to upload any more pictures to Wikipedia (not interested). I'm sorry I uploaded so many pictures already. I requested that eclipse picture to be deleted. With time I would request all of my other pictures to be deleted too.

First, thank you for creating the image of Pangaea at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Pangaea_continents.png

I would like to use a modified version of it on one of my websites, but I'm not sure how to credit it. I've been reading some of the licensing pages, but they're very confusing.

This is the text I've tentatively included on my web page, under the image:

Image modified by David Blomstrom from the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Pangaea_continents.png">original</a>, made by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Kieff">User Kieff</a>

Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this image under the terms of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GNU_Free_Documentation_License">GNU Free Documentation License</a>, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts. Subject to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:General_disclaimer">disclaimers</a>.

1) Do I need to include all of that text? 2) I replaced the word "document" with the word "image," because I don't want visitors to think they can freely modify and distribute my web page. 3) Can I include the gnu logo if I'd like to? In most cases, I'd prefer not to, but it would look nice on an animals website I'm designing.

Also, how should I credit an image that's taken from the Wikimedia Commons and has been released into the public domain, like this one?:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Continental_models.gif

I assume I can see any responses to my post by visiting this page. But just in case, you can contact me via http://www.geobop.org/Contact/

Thank you!

Kieff, eu não entendo isso de: "This user is a Brazilian and doesn't like that at all!" I am a Chilean by birth, a Venezuelan by adoption (and a fellow computer professional), have made 4 trips to Brazil, stayed as long as 3 months, visited 10 cities, and loved each minute of it! I wish I were a Brazilian! Eu repito, não entendo nada! --AVM 23:12, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

What makes you think you should, or would, understand it? It's a personal thing, nothing else. People can dislike their countries and home cultures just the same way as they dislike certain kinds of food, music or other people. Why is it so hard to imagine and respect the fact someone just doesn't happen to like their home country? What makes so many people think that just because I happened to be born here I have to love every single thing Brazilian? Why does you, an entirely different person with an entirely different personality, thinks your appreaciation for the country is in any way relevant to my judgement of it? I'm sounding like a prick, I know, but I'm fairly sick of that kind of disrespectful flawled logic being pushed around. People have different tastes, and they apply to every single thing out there. Why can't people just respect that? It's one of those things that make people interesting: they're different!
So, please, just accept the fact that people are free to like and dislike things, of any kind, as long as it's done in a peaceful and respectful manner. Thanks for your time. — Kieff | Talk 03:21, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Kieff, as has been eloquently pointed out by SteveBaker, my response to your “Odd vision problem” included an ill-considered comment pertaining to your medical history. I just wanted to apologies for any perceived diagnoses I may have given you. Such was not my intent. I trust that you have already sought medical advice, and hope that all is well with you. Best, --S.dedalus 04:30, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

No worries. I'm well aware of Wikipedia's policies, and I'm also well aware that nothing said in the Reference Desk should be taken as certain, or as a replacement for professional help. I wouldn't take advice from anyone there, like I said. I was just looking for possible explanations of what could cause that specific effect, since as far as I know (and also the medic I visited), none of the common eye problems offer that kind of optical effect. We're all puzzled, so I'm gonna have to look more into it with other professionals this week. I'm just hoping it's not a neurological thing, but I do want to find out what's causing this, so any theory would be worth checking out, if done appropriately. Thanks! — Kieff | Talk 04:48, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Prcessing gyroscope movie

Dear Kieff, would you be willing to make a variation of the precessing gyroscope movie for my free physics textbook? (I would include it in the pdf file.) I am publishing a free 1300 page physics textbook that everybody can download for free (see http://www.motionmountain.net ). It has no commercial interest; no ads, no income of any kind. The text is my hobby since many years; readers, especially in countries where books are expensive, enjoy reading it. At present, I am working on the new edition, which will again expand its material. I am looking for a movie where the gyroscopes hangs from a wire, so that the structure of two rings is not needed (as long as one sees that the gyroscope rotates). Of course I would mention your name (if you want) and copyright (if you want). You can contact me via the website, if you are interested. Otherwise, just forget/delete this section. [edit] Graphics Lab Announcement

[edit] Attention All Wikigraphists!

As you may or may have not noticed, the Graphics Lab pages have gone under a massive cleanup by User:DTR, User:Rugby471 and various others (sorry if I missed you out). Some of the things that have happened are.

  • All pages in the Graphics Lab have had, where sensible, templates, substituting elements. For example, the main Lab page was a large chunk of around 100 lines of pure code. It was not very easy to edit the main page, so the various sections of it (eg links, welcome) have been separated. Therefore the main page is now only around 20 lines of user friendly text. If you wish to edit the main page, you must look on the main page for the correct template to edit. (Fore example if I wanted to edit the links section, I would go to Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/links and edit the text there). This has been done to all of the pages, in an attempt to make them more user-friendly.

  • As you were notified of early, the Wikigraphist Abilities page has been set up and has been beginning to get populated. If you haven't already setup your own entry, you are advised to go and do so now.

  • Due to a comment from User:DTR. A template for Graphics Lab announcements has been created. It is at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement. If you ever need to issue a message to Wikigraphists, please use this template in the form

{{Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement|message ~~~~}}

Where message is the announcement you wish to issue.

  • On the Images to Improve Page, an issue was noticed where that when requests were completed, people were adding {{Did}} but forgetting to add <!--werdnabot-archive--&gt so that the request would be archived. Therefore a template has been created (yes another one!) to help with this. When a user creates a new request instead of putting the usual code, they shall put

{{Request Title|title=Lorem Ipsum|done=false}}. Now when a request is completed, all you will have to do is change done to true

done=true

and the template will add the {{did}} template and also <!--werdnabot-archive--> to the title, so it will get archived.

As always, if you experience any issues with the new changes, or are just a bit confused, please don't hesitate to contact me or DTR on our talk pages.

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Textbox.png

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Textbox.png. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. You could argue that the hoverboard will become a product in the future, but unless you've got a reliable source claiming an actual hoverboard is due to be released sometime in the near future, with a date to it and everything, you won't be able to justify the inclusion of the future product template on the page. — Kieff | Talk 20:58, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Projection used for Pangaea map

Hi Kieff,

I'm trying to find out what projection[3] you used for the Pangaea Continents[4] image you made.

Many thanks! Hagenaer —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.31.255.3 (talk) 20:01, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure, but it was an Azimuthal map I've found on the web. — Kieff | Talk 18:16, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Kieff,

Crystal ball, what? Your image of a tri-axial (motor-)cycle front wheel precessing about a "lean" (bank) axis can only relate to my unique extant prototype. This is illustrated at the publications section of www.surreycommunity/info/brp Conventional "rake & trail" bicycle front ends do not give such elegant precession due to their compound steering geometry. Would you be interested in seeing my next prototype, once I have built it? Peter (the biker). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.85.12.211 (talk) 08:48, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Science Without Numbers by Hartry H. Field

Where in Brazil are you? There's an excellent book store in a lot of the larger cities called 'Livraria Cultura' that has a surprisingly good philosophy section, books in MANY languages, and will also order books for you. [www.mercadolivre.com Mercado Livre], Brazil's response to eBay might giv eyou some options too. Does amazon not deliver to Brazil?

I've already looked on Livraria Cultura's website. Amazon has a couple used copies, but they're ultra-expensive. Mercado Livre doesn't have it. :( — Kieff | Talk 18:13, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:David Bowie as Nikola Tesla.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:David Bowie as Nikola Tesla.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

[edit] IMDB template directions

Help. I am trying to link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0814396 to this article, but the current template does not like the 'tt' in front of the number. Is there another way to extract the IMDB code to the article? StevePrutz (talk) 06:09, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
