Kian Alvane

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kian Alvane is a fictional character from the computer game Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.

[edit] Biography

Kian is an Azadi Apostle, an elite knight-assassin who has devoted his life to serve the Six Empresses of the Azadi and the Goddess (a monotheistic deity commonly worshipped in the Azadi Empire) and initially sees no difference between the service to the Six and to the Goddess, something that his mentor and fatherly figure, Garmon Koumas, finds worrying. His permanent residence is in Sadir, although he easily abandons it when sent on a mission.

When we first see Kian in Dreamfall, he is sent to Marcuria to kill a resistance leader whom the Azadi call "the Scorpion" and who is, in fact, April Ryan. Before Kian leaves for Marcuria, Garmon advises Kian to do what he himself believes is right rather than what others tell him is so, advice that Kian quickly dismisses, only to recall much later.

Upon arriving in Marcuria, Kian is brought to the Tower, the Azadi office in Marcuria, to speak with the Emissary. There he meets an old rival of his, Commander Vamon, who dislikes Kian for being from a lower cast, meaning that he has no noble heritage or blood. Vamon also dislikes that Kian has risen much too fast through the ranks, and is convinced that "someone inside the Six's circle holds his hand". Vamon is assigned by the Emissary to keep an eye on Kian while he attempts to locate the Scorpion.

Kian manages to track down a Zhid who's been in contact with the rebels. But just as he is about to interrogate him, a soldier shows up and tells Kian that they've caught a rebel witch, upon which Kian goes to Friar's Keep, a semi-magical prison designed to lock away those capable of magical arts, to interrogate the witch instead. The witch turns out to be Zoë Castillo, who tries to convince Kian that she's not a witch, but was just sent to Marcuria by someone else. He believes her and attempts to get her released, but the warden dismisses him.

On his way from Friar's Keep, Kian meets April and the two of them get into a heated discussion about the Azadi politics towards the local population of the Northlands. The argument ends with Kian being impressed with April's passion and honesty. He attempts to engage her in a further discussion, but she (politely) dismisses him because she is, in fact, also en route to see Zoë and to break her out of the Keep.

The next time we see Kian, he has already found out that The Journeyman's Inn is the headquarters of the rebels in Marcuria and threatens Na'ane into helping him find the Scorpion. But instead of finding the male rebel leader he was expecting to meet in the rebels' swamp encampment, he finds April. Kian explains to her that both her words and the things he has seen in Marcuria have made him realize that what the Azadi were doing in the Northlands, such as promoting (often with force) their religion and discriminating against the magical peoples, was wrong and that they are not within their rights to do so.

Just as April is starting to believe him, Azadi aerial dropships appear in the sky and soon the camp is crawling with well-armed Azadi soldiers. Commander Vamon approaches Kian and April, explaining that he had Kian secretly followed and, thusly, found the camp. He then accuses Kian of high treason and collaborating with the terrorists, telling Kian that he may only redeem himself by completing his original mission and slaying April/Scorpion. However, Kian refuses to do so and another soldier stabs her.

The last time we see Kian in Dreamfall, he is taken in custody by Vamon's soldiers to be later brought to Sadir for trial and execution.
