James ("Jim") Paul Montgomery (born January 24, 1955 in Madison, Wisconsin) is an American former swimmer. Inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1986 as an Honor Swimmer, Montgomery was the first man to break the 50-second barrier (49.99) in the 100 meter freestyle. He did this at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal where he won three gold medals and one bronze medal in various events.
Jim achieved international attention at the Summer 1973 World Aquatic Games in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. He won 5 gold medals in freestyle events, all in world time, and all beating times established by Mark Spitz. From Yugoslavia, Jim went to Indiana University, swam for Doc Councilman for four years, with the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games taking place between his junior and senior years.
He now coaches varsity swimming at the Greenhill School in Addison, Texas. He also is the owner and founder of the Dallas Aquatic Masters swimming company as well as the head of a rather large family. He has been married to his wife for fifteen years and has five children.
