Janakpuri is one of the best middle class residential colonies in West Delhi. It is divided into four major blocks namely A,B, C and D. The blocks are divided as follows A>A1 A2 A3 B>B1 B2> B2-A, B2-b B3> B3-A C>C1 C2> C2-A, C2-B, C2-C, C2-D C3> C3-A C4> C4-A....C4-H The blocks noted by a letter followed by number eg. C3, D2 etc. consists of Kothis The blocks noted by 3 letters like C3-A, C2-c etc cnsist of DDA Flats.

(Private houses are called 'kothis')

Markets: All the blocks of Janakpuri have at least one local market. Traditionally, the more popular markets in Janakpuri were the C-4-E market and the B-1 super market. Lately, however, "The District Center" (near the B-1 periphery) has become one of the most popular shopping centers in West Delhi. It is home to a theatre multiplex, multi-storeyed shopping cum office complexes, restaurants, book shops, gift stores, brand outlets, food-courts, the Transport Authority and the Telephone Exchange. It is undoubtedly the commercial hub of West Delhi.

Weekly Produce Markets or Bazaars[1] Janakpuri has some of the biggest weekly produce markets. The Monday Bazaar (in and around B-1 block), The Friday Bazaar (B Blocks) and the Saturday Bazaar (C Blocks) Every week, residents can buy fresh produce and a variety of artisan-made articles in these Bazaars.There is also "Chhoti Sabzi Mandi" which is by far the biggest one stop shop for purchasing milk products, such as khoya, paneer, ghee etc. It also has a big vegetable market and shops selling mutton and poultry.

Schools & Colleges: Janakpuri is home to some very good schools like St. Marks, St. Francis de Sales, Kendriya Vidyalaya and D.T.E.A Senior Secondary Schools. It also has a Delhi University College (Bharti College) and a technical studies institute.

Places of Worship: Janakpuri has a number of active and vibrant Temples, Gurdwaras, Churches and other places of worship. Some of the more prominent places of worship are the Kripa Dham, the Sri Rajarajeshwari temple, the Hanuman Mandir, the St. Gregorios Church, the Ganesh Mandir and the Shiv Mandir. One cannot go past the Kripa Dham , without hearing the musical chanting. of "Ram Ji Ram Ram". Janakpuri has a culture of unity in diversity as is evidenced by the rare and harmonious confluence of three different religious centres (a Temple, a Gurdwara and a Church) right next to each other. It is thus, a true representative community of the secular country that is India.

Hospitals: Janakpuri has a strong network of public health services such as hospitals, clinics and nursing homes. Prominent among them is the large multi-specialty tertiary hospital - Mata Channan Devi Hospital. Janakpuri is also served by the government-owned Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in Hari Nagar. A 600-bed super speciality hospital is already construded and is ready to be innaugrated by 3rd or 4th quarter, 2008.

Transportation: Janakpuri has an excellent transportation infrastructure. It is very well connected with other parts of the state by buses which are operated by the DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) or private operators. A privately operated network of chartered buses ply from almost all blocks of Janakpuri to corporate offices in and around the National Capital Territory. Their fares are competitively priced. In recent years, the Delhi Metro has grown at a rapid pace with three metro-stations in Janakpuri (Uttam Nagar, Janakpuri East and Janakpuri West). It is anticipated that the metro will receive an equal share of the usual commuter traffic on the buses in the coming years.
