Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea, colloquially known as Intelligentsia, is a coffee roasting company with its headquarters at 1850 W. Fulton Street in Chicago, Illinois. Intelligentsia has several cafe retail locations throughout the Chicago area. The company was founded in 1995 by Doug Zell and Emily Mange (now husband and wife). They supply coffee to various Chicago-area cafes and restaurants, as well as other locations in the US and Canada.[1][2][3] They generally buy their beans directly from growers in Central America, South America, East Africa, and Ethiopia.[4] They use vintage German roasters to roast their beans daily.[4]
On August 17th, Intelligentsia will be opening its first store outside of Chicago at Sunset Junction in Silver Lake, a district east of Hollywood in Los Angeles, California.[5] The location will feature two newfangled Clover single cup brewing machines.[5]
[edit] Honors
In 2006, Intelligentsia has been included on several local [6][7][8] and national[9][10][11] best-of lists. One of their baristas also has won national and international honors.[12][13]
It has been winning local best of list recognition since 2000. [14] [15] [16] [17] In 2005, the local [18] [19] [20] [21] recognition extended to national [22] recognition. In 2006, Intelligentsia has been included on several local [23] and national [24] [25] [26] "best" lists.
