Hypocorrection
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hypocorrection is a linguistic phenomenon which involves the purposeful addition of slang in attempt to appear less intelligible or soften the description. It contrasts with hesitation and modulation because rather than the speaker not having the right words to say or choosing to avoid them, the speaker uses hypocorrection as a strategy. It involves a Redundancy shift which is entirely controlled by the speaker. Hypocorrection is one of the mechanisms by which languages change. "hypo-correction is an “unintended failure of the perceptual process” (Ohala, 1993)"
