Hylton Red House School is a comprehensive secondary school for ages 11-16 located in Redhouse, Sunderland, England.
As of 2005 it had 736 students, a fall of 25% since 2000. A relatively high proportion of students came from deprived backgrounds. [1] [2]
[edit] Call centre training
In 2007 the school attracted some controversy regarding a training programme for call centre operators. The programme was set up in conjunction with an energy company (EDF Energy) which has a call centre in the area. For pupils, successful completion of the course provided half of the credit of a GCSE examination. Local adults were also able to participate. An assistant teacher claimed the programme was a successful one, providing students with "a taste of a real working environment" and helping to build their confidence. However a Sunderland representative of the National Union of Teachers criticized the scheme as "a step too far".[2]
