Household Harmony began in 2006 in the South Hills of Greater Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The idea was to offer family activities in order to help families come together in McMurray and Upper St. Clair.
Household Harmony operates on the premise that working as a group establishes and fosters a family culture of cooperation, respect and fun that lasts a lifetime. Its leadership argues that making up and enjoying simple family rituals, routines and projects can go a long way toward making a house a home.
One family activity offered by Household Harmony is making music together. According to Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz of the Center for Music and Young Children "early childhood development in general and successful educational programs in particular can be attributed to the partnership between the young child and his or her significant others" (The Importance of Music in Early Childhood).
In The Secret of Childhood, early childhood researcher and educator Dr. Maria Montessori wrote, “A child is an eager observer and is particularly attracted by the actions of . . . adults and wants to imitate them. In this regard an adult can have a kind of mission. He can be an inspiration for the child’s actions, a kind of open book wherein a child can learn how to direct his own movements.” Her century-old work laid the groundwork for the current study of significant-adult participation and modeling in relation to child development.
