Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva, usually known as Fred (born 18 August 1979), is a football (soccer) player from Brazil. He currently plays for Major League Soccer team D.C. United after signing from Melbourne Victory in the A-League. He had previously played at Brazilian clubs América-MG, Guarani and Tupi FC.
[edit] Life and career
Despite a controversial three-game suspension for an alleged elbow, Fred was one of the standouts of the 2006-07 A-League season. His popularity increased when he appeared in a television commercial promoting underwear. He was voted best A-League player for season 2 by the The World Game Team. In the 2007 A-League Grand Final, Fred had four assists on the hat trick (five goals) scored by Archie Thompson.
After the season, Fred signed with Major League Soccer club D.C. United[1][2]. It was reported to be a matter of money, as United offered a guaranteed salary of $222,000 USD per year (which the Melbourne Victory cannot match due to the more stringent salary cap in the A-League).[3]
The name on the back of his DC United jersey is simply "Fred", despite initially being told he would have to use his proper last name, per MLS rules. He made his debut on April 3, 2007 against Chivas de Guadalajara in a CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal match.
