[edit] Academic achievement

The school places much emphasis in academics. Hart currently is leading in academics based on Advanced Placement test scores in the district.[citation needed] According to statistics from the district released in 2005, of the 1,886 students that passed at least one AP test:

  • 33% of those passing students were from Hart
  • 26% were from Valencia
  • 22% were from Saugus
  • 19% were from the Canyon

In addition, according to Newsweek's Jay Matthews' Challenge Index, which uses AP exams to identify the top high schools in the United States, Hart ranked in the top 2.8% percentile, placing above other well-known high schools in California.[citation needed] In Newsweek's Top 1000 Best High Schools in America for 2003, Hart ranked #790 in the nation.[citation needed] Newsweek's Top 1000 list has Hart ranked #740 for tests taken in 2004.[citation needed] And at the end of the 2005-2006 school year Newsweek's 1000 list ranked Hart #700 reaching higher than any high school in the Santa Clarita Valley.[citation needed]

[edit] Associated Student Body

The Student Body Organization, Hart ASB, consists of elected and appointed Hart Students who serve as representatives of the whole student body during each school year. Under the guidance of the Administration and ASB Director these students plan and execute various activities "to encourage a cooperative spirit, develop constructive student leadership, and promote student well-being." Hart ASB is one of the most active and visible groups on campus, and almost all student related groups and activities depend on the support and guidance provided by ASB. Hart ASB is considered a sub-division of the state and it adheres to many of the same guidelines as a 501-C3,tax exempt organization, though it is technically not classified as one.

Under the guidelines of the organization's constitution and strict accounting policies, groups are able to raise and spend funds through ASB for the general benefit of Hart students. The current ASB Director is Pete Calzia and the ASB Accountant is Stacey Meyers.

[edit] Hart Regiment

The Hart Regiment is a marching band headed by band director Anthony Bailey for the last seven years, during which they have won six straight SCSBOA championships (in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007). The Regiment consists of a front percussion ensemble, marching winds, pageantry, and drumline. The Band Director is Anthony H. Bailey and the Pageantry Advisor is Erica Hardbarger.

In August 2006, the winds and drumline recorded original marching band music by composer Rob Walker (ASCAP) for the NBC series Friday Night Lights.

In the Fall Semester of 2007 the Hart Regiment Marching Band went to the Bands of America Grand Nationals. The competition took place in the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 14 through 17 of 2007.

[edit] Spring Instrumental Ensembles

In the spring, the instrumental students separate into different ensemble groups. The Wind Ensemble is the higher of the two full ensembles which students must audition for. Because of the small size of the wind ensemble, the remaining students perform in the Concert Band. Students in percussion may also participate in the indoor drumline group, which performs shows with a front ensemble and a marching drumline. The Jazz Band is an extracurricular activity in the fall, and an audition group in the spring.

In February, 2007, the Wind Ensemble was one of two high school bands in the state of California to perform at the California Band Director's Association's 50th anniversary conference in Fresno, California.[citation needed] Groups were chosen by audition using live recordings of the previous year's musicians.

March 2007 brought the group's second trip to the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana (the other first being in 2003). It performed in Clowes Hall at Butler University on March 16th as part of this event. The following pieces were played:

[edit] The Smoke Signal

Hart's student-run newspaper is published monthly. It includes news stories, sports coverage, and editorials. On March 14, Michael Ewart, Suraj Bhogal, and Kevin Chang picked the NCAA and NBA Champions in a mock playoff.

While the paper's purpose is to inform the student population of school occurrences and relay the opinions of their peers, it is often censored by the administration for statements that conflict with other, more prestigious school organizations: namely Hart ASB.

[edit] Hart High Trivia

  • Hart's original school colors were maroon and gray, but later changed to red and black in 1968.
  • Hart was named for local cowboy actor William S. Hart.

  • Television series The Greatest American Hero was filmed at the school.
