Hans Günter Winkler (born July 24, 1926 in Barmen - now part of Wuppertal) is a successful former German show jumping rider.
In the 1950s and 1960s Winkler was one of Germany's most popular athletes. He won his first German championship in 1952. This made him one of the favorites for the Olympic Games 1956. Legendary is the profit its first gold medal at the Olympic Games. 1956 found the Equestrian Games in Stockholm, as the athletes and their horses are not allowed to travel to Melbourne. Winkler retired in the first round of the team and individual decision to the thirteenth obstacle he had torn a thigh muscle and could only be painful in the saddle. His horse Halla helped him over the obstacles to their goal. After a consideration of the team doctor, the only one inguinal hernia was diagnosed, Winkler sat for the second round back in the saddle, but had little opportunity to correct his horse. With great pain, he still won him the gold medal for the team and the individual. His horse has been since the miracle mare Halla.
Winkler won between 1956 and 1976 five gold medals in jumping (in addition to the four individual medals with the German team) and a silver medal, making him one of the most successful German Olympic athletes made. It was 1955 and 1956 to athlete of the year and also for the athletes of the 1950s and 1960s. 1986 adopted by the Winkler is active in the equestrian jumping World Cup in Aachen. Time of his career Winkler published numerous books on riding and founded in 1991 HGW-Marketinggesellschaft the Riding.
Hans Günter Winkler also received the Federal Cross of Merit, and the media award Bambi and 2002 the award as weltbester jumping at the Olympic Games.
