The GW Cricket Club, commonly referred to as GW Cricket, is the official cricket club of The George Washington University. It is a school sponsored sports club at the University.[1]. It consists of an member body of over 40 students. Due to the school's urban campus the club holds practice in the Smith Center behind the bleachers where there is a makeshift batting cage. The club holds practices late at night once or twice a week. GW Cricket plays teams mostly in the Washington D.C. area.

The George Washington University has had numerous attempts in the past by students in establishing a dedicated cricket club. The school's namesake George Washington was known to play the sport at Valley Forge.
The club originally started in the fall of 2006 when two freshmen decided to teach their friends the sport. The sport’s popularity began to show as more people joined their pick-up games that year. A movement started to register the sport as an “official club” at the school.[2] Once the club became recognized they started playing other teams in the area such as American University.[3] Due to the lack of field space at The George Washington University, the club has been forced to play all of its matches away in Maryland, Virginia, and other campuses in Washington D.C. The club has also hosted movie nights that use cricket in social context. In addition, it has organized the first-ever India versus Pakistan cricket match at the school.

Today, the club is made up of international students from places such as Pakistan, India, U.A.E, and Indonesia. There is also a strong American-born contingent in the club that are made up of novices to experienced players. The ration between international and domestic students is around 50-50 in the mostly undergraduate club. With twenty playing members in the club, the team has enough to field both an "A" and "B" team. The club now has a website, multiple bats, balls, stand-up wickets, and a cricket bag which allows them to be fully equipped for the future. The club's number one focus for the up-coming year is to qualify to play in a hard tennis ball league in the area.
