"Grigore Kotovski (mostly known under his Russified name, Grigori Ivanovich Kotovsky, Russian: Григорий Иванович Котовский; born June 24 [O.S. June 12] 1881 in Hînceşti, now in the Republic of Moldova; died August 6, 1925 in Birzula, now in Ukraine) was a Moldovan military leader and Communist activist."
Calling Kotovsky a "Moldovan" military leader is like calling Benjamin Franklin an "English" statesman.
Kotovsky was born in Moldova, which at that time was just a province ("Bessarabskaya gubernia") in the Russian empire. His ethnic background is probably mixed Ukrainian - Russian - Moldovan, his native language was Russian and his military career was with the russian-dominated Red Army in Ukraine.
