The Girne American University (Turkish: Girne Amerikan Üniversitesi) is located in the northern part of Cyprus in the de facto state of Northern Cyprus.

Girne American University was founded in 1985 as an independent, non-profit institution of higher education. From its establishment, the university has focused on providing access to an American-style higher education to the widest possible group of motivated learners. In charting its course for the next century, GAU will continue to be guided by this special mission. GAU is located in Northern Cyprus, outstanding with its excellent nature and climate, safe environment and low cost of living. GAU is distinguished by its tremendous location and campus, nestling under the splendor of Besparmak Mountains, lying on a plateau overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
The university’s international identity is distinctive. GAU lies on the ancient Silk Road between east and west and is uniquely placed to understand the cultures of a region stretching from Europe to Asia.
The university maintains its accreditations and memberships to continuously enhance the quality of the education provided. The accrediting bodies monitor and confirm the quality of the education provision. It is the university’s policy to conform to the requirements of the several relevant accrediting bodies and to seek accreditation from additional bodies as appropriate. GAU’s professional memberships act as a forum for exchanging the latest ideas and innovations in the field of higher education.
On-line GAU Cybrary provides access to over 13,000 journals and over 25,000 books. Cybrary is also included in the Global Softlink library which provides access to major university libraries in the UK and USA.GAU’s reference library is housed conveniently within the Campus. It is organised as a traditional/lending and research library with open stacks allowing free access to the collection. There is a book collection of some 25,000 volumes. The library also subscribes to some 50 journals and periodicals. Inter library loans are available between the libraries of other universities on the island. There is a small but growing collection of CD-ROMs which include “Books imprint” and journal catalogues. There is a wide range of reference books and encyclopaedias.
GAU has a wide network of alumni, pursuing their careers all over the world. GAU is proud to provide its students internationally recognized credits, allowing its students the opportunity to participate in student exchange programs with GAU’s partner universities in USA and Europe.
