Gilberto Galdino dos Santos commonly known as Beto (b. 20 November 1976) is a Brazilian football (soccer) player who currently plays forFC Sion. He holds a Portuguese passport.
[edit] Football career
After five years in Portugal with mid-to-bottom table clubs, namely Paços de Ferreira and Beira-Mar, Beto signed a 3-year deal with Benfica in the summer of 2005.[1]
Despite not being a fans' favourite, Beto was a first team player for SL Benfica during his first season at the club, under manager Ronald Koeman. Beto played in 24 matches, lasting the whole 90 minutes in 12 of these, averaging 70 minutes per match [2].
Beto's greatest moment at Benfica probably happened on December 8, 2005, when the Portuguese side defeated English giants Manchester United 2-1, sealing their passage to the Champions League knockout stages. Beto scored the deciding goal when both teams were tied 1-1[3].
His second season in the club was less notable: with the departure of Koeman, and the arrival of manager Santos and defensive midfielder Katsouranis, Beto was relegated to the subs bench. He played only 58 minutes throughout the whole season, in 6 matches, all of which he started on the bench. Thus, Beto signed a two-year contract with the Swiss club FC Sion on 15 June 2007.
[edit] International career
He was a member of the Brazil squad at the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup.
