Genevieve Nnaji (born May 03, 1979) is a popular Nigerian actress from the Mbaise region of Imo State, Nigeria. Genevieve found mainstream success in Nollywood, Nigeria's movie industry's nickname, in 2001, and has consistently added accolades, such as singer, producer to her resume. In 2004 she became the face for Lux soap in a highly lucrative sponsorship deal. Among other actors and actresses, she released her first album, titled No More, in 2005, following a one year acting ban in Nigeria.
[edit] Ban
In 2005 the Actors' Guild of Nigeria placed Genevieve and several other actors, including Stella Damasus Aboderin, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Nkem Owoh, Ramsey Noah, Pete Edochie, and Richard Mofe Damijo on a one year ban from filming after they were said to have been collecting huge fees from producers due to their A-list celebrity status. The ban placed on these actors was seen as doom in the Nigerian film business, and often attributed to the emergence of the Ghanaian Movie Industry, which moved in to fill the vacuum created by the ban. Most of these actors ventured into the music industry like Genevieve, but are currently back in filming.
