[edit] The name
The municipality is named after Frænfjorden (Old Norse Fræni). The meaning of the name is unknown (it might be derived from frænn 'bright, shiny').
Until 1918 the name was written Frænen. (And before 1865 the parish and municipality was named Vaagø.)
