Emanuele Saiu is correctly pronounced in Italian as /emanuˈɛle saˈiu/ [ˌemanuˈɛˑle saˈiˑu], (not /ˈsaju/ [ˈsaːju], although this pronunciation is often heard).

The right pronunciation can also be transcribed as Emanuèle Saìu in Italian orthography, if we use optional diacritical marks; or even more scrupulously as Emanu̱èle Saìu or Emanüèle Saìu, where u̱ or ü, in accordance with conventions followed in special cases such as dictionary entries or some editions of literary texts, means this letter has a syllabic vowel sound ([u], not [w]).

In an English context, my first name can be pronounced as /ˌemənuˈeleɪ/ (rhyming with one of the English pronunciations of mêlée, whereas the beginning of the name sounds as Emma in English...). My surname is much more difficult, since such a word as /sɑːˈiːu(ː)/ or /səˈiːu(ː)/ would be very unlikely in English.

A rough English-language respelling could be something like emma-noo-ELL-ay sah-EE-oo (capitalization marks the stress).

Emanuele is a male name in Italian, but outside Italy it is often mistaken for a female one, since its written form resembles the French name Emmanuelle. Let us shed some light on this misunderstanding!

Although my surname (Saiu (help·info)) is from Sardinia, I am Tuscan. I was born in Lucca (Tuscany, Italy) on January 16, 1983; I reside in Ponte Buggianese but currently spend most time in Pisa because of my studies.
