The Division of Herbert is an Australian Electoral Division in Queensland. Eligible voters within the Division elect a single representative, known as the member for Herbert, to the Australian House of Representatives. The division was created in 1901, and was first contested at the 1901 election. It is located in northern Queensland, and is named for Sir Robert Herbert, the first Premier of Queensland (1859-1866). On its original boundaries it extended from Mackay to the Torres Strait, but today it has been cut back to little more than the city of Townsville. The seat had been a bellwether for Federal electoral results for three decades, having consistently changed between Labor and Liberal Members in the same way as changes in Government between 1977 and 2007.
It was hotly contested in the 2007 Election with local identity and businessman George Colbran preselected by Labor to contest Herbert. Colbran conceded defeat to sitting member Peter Lindsay on 5 December.[1]
