[edit] Playing career
Roy led the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL with 87 points during the 1999-00 season, and won the OHL Rookie of the Year trophy. The next season, he scored 42 goals and 81 points. He was drafted 32nd overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. The next season Roy set OHL career highs in goals and points and continued to be the Rangers leading scorer.
In the Fall of 2002, Roy played for the Sabres during their preseason games. Despite his strong showing, he returned the Rangers for the 2002-03 season, his last in the OHL. Roy captained the Rangers to the Memorial Cup and won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as Memorial Cup MVP. That year, he was also selected to play for Team Canada in the 2003 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, and brought home a silver medal and got player of the game and received a crystal puck.
Roy moved on to the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League the next season. However, he only played 26 games with the Americans, as he played most of the season with the Sabres. Roy was back with the Americans for the 2004-05 season because of the 2004-05 NHL lockout, and he failed to make the Sabres out of training camp when NHL play resumed in 2005-06. However, he scored 20 points in 8 games with the Americans (including a few 5-point performances) and was called up to the Sabres.
On Friday, March 3, 2006, Roy recorded his first NHL hat trick against the Toronto Maple Leafs. His second hat trick came six days later against the Tampa Bay Lightning.[1]
Derek Roy also has the fastest goal to start a playoff game in franchise history, Game 4 with the Ottawa Senators in the 06/07 season, at nine seconds. He was three seconds off from the league record of six seconds.
On July 27, 2007 Derek Roy agreed to a 6-year $24 million deal with the Buffalo Sabres [1]. In his first season under the new contract, Roy led the Sabres in points and was second in goals and assists.
Roy scored his third career hat trick against the Atlanta Thrashers on January 18, 2008. On May 14, 2008, while playing for Team Canada, he scored a hat trick against Norway at the World Championships.
