Talk:DeFuniak Springs, Florida

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DeFuniak Springs does not have a space between De and Funiak. Please fix the title of the article!BaliPearl (talk) 04:30, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Please do not change all the spellings in the article while the article name is unchanged. The USGS GNIS [1] lists the location as "De Funiak Springs", and gives no alternate spellings. I see that the city's web site uses "DeFuniak Springs". I also find that various government web sites use "De Funiak", "DeFuniak" and "Defuniak". The Census Bureau appears to primarily or exclusively use "De Funiak Springs". Since most of the city articles in Wikipedia were created by a bot using census data, this article was created as "De Funiak Springs". "DeFuniak Springs, Florida" is currently a redirect to this article. If the consensus is to move this article to the "DeFuniak" spelling, an administrator (I am one) would need to delete the current redirect at "DeFuniak Springs". We now need to wait and see what other editors have to say about this. -- Donald Albury 14:31, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
For me, it'd depend on the person it was named after. The few online sources I can find (that don't derive from here) seem to favor DeFuniak as the guy's name. But some have the space. I don't know when I'll next get to a library, but I would recommend looking it up the old fashioned way. That is, books. But that's just my opinion, doncha know. :) -Ebyabe (talk) 23:44, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm interested in what the city's charter says. As the city has dropped the space on its official website, it may have officially changed the name. The form with the space seems to be the historical name. -- Donald Albury 03:07, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

DeFuniak Springs is the correct spelling. I was born and raised there. It was named after Colonel DeFuniak. All you have to do is contact the post office and find out the correct spelling. I am sorry you went back and changed all my corrections. BaliPearl (talk) 18:26, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

It is ONLY spelled DeFuniak Springs. People like me do not like to see our hometown misspelled. I tried to fix it, and someone changed it. BaliPearl (talk) 22:51, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Balipearl is correct, city website should control. See: http://www.defuniaksprings.net/ The other arguments are unreasonable. It is much more likely that the census data is wrong than the city would misspell its own name on its website. If it makes you feel any better, I've been through the town and know how it is spelled. Additionally, I don't see any "historical" references to De (space) Funiak Springs. To the contrary, the vast majority of citations available online indicate the name is DeFuniak Springs. A simple google search (if going to the official city page isn't enough for you) is enough consensus in this case. The title should be changed. Agrippina Minor (talk) 23:00, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
I don't think it is such a slam dunk. It would have been nice if you had waited for this discussion to reach a consensus before unilaterally making the changes. As it stands, you have changed the name of the city within the article, but not the name of the article. -- Donald Albury 11:21, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
I also wish a bit more time had been taken to discuss this. Ironically, I agree more now with the spaceless spelling after checking the National Register of Historic Places database. They have all the historic properties listed as being in DeFuniak Springs. So that's another reliable source that says no space. Still, I think it would have been better to make all the changes everywhere at once (including this article's name), rather than piecemeal. -Ebyabe (talk) 18:07, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

I would be happy to fix the error in the title and everywhere else if I had access. It is important to be accurate and correct. I don't really think a consensus is needed since I lived a great portion of my life there, and my mother and other family members live there. DeFuniak Springs is often misspelled, and I am simply trying to fix an error on Wikipedia. BaliPearl (talk) 18:42, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

The article has been in Wikipedia since October, 2002 with the space in the name. There would have been no harm in waiting a few days for a discussion to take place. There is no deadline in Wikipedia. -- Donald Albury 16:33, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
OK, I have moved the article. BaliPearl, perhaps you would like to clean up the redirects at [[2]]. -- Donald Albury 16:46, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Donald, thanks for moving the article. I am sorry to say that I am not a savvy user like you. I don't even know what you mean about cleaning up redirects. Thanks for spelling DeFuniak correctly. I promise you that is the correct way to spell it. I don't know much about Wikipedia etiquette, but I will try to learn! BaliPearl (talk) 08:29, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

That means going to the link I provided and finding all the articles that link to "De Funiak Springs" and changing them to link to "DeFuniak Springs". -- Donald Albury 13:12, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
