Dan Bălan (born February 6, 1979 in Chişinău, Moldovan SSR) is a Moldovan singer, songwriter, and producer. He has performed rock, pop, and even gothic/doom metal before he became popular. One of the most successful part of his music career was when he was part of the eurodance music trio O-Zone, a group he led to fame across Europe with the hit single Dragostea din Tei.
In 2004, Bălan decided to venture closer to his rock roots. He chose the best musicians in his region and moved with them to Los Angeles in 2005. Although Dan wrote the compositions prior to the formation of Balan (band), it took two years to get a signature sound and their own captivating style. He asked producer Jack Joseph Puig (John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, No Doubt, The Black Crows, Rolling Stones) to produce the record. The album was recorded in April/June of 2006 at Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles.
[edit] O-Zone
Dan Bălan's biggest success in his music career has been was with the pop music trio, O-Zone. He was the head manager of the band, producing and writing nearly all of their compositions. Dan formed O-Zone in 1999 and released three albums through 2004. Their best-selling LP was DiscO-Zone, which reached #1 in six countries and sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide (1,000,000 in Japan alone). Dan’s most successful song to date is "Dragostea din tei", a song from the album DiscO-Zone.
[edit] Crazy Loop
Dan shocked and amazed fans in 2007 by introducing his alter ego "Crazy Loop" to the world with the Eurodance flavored song "Crazy Loop (Mm Ma Ma)." The video, directed by Marc Klasfeld, was filmed in Los Angeles, CA and released throughout Europe the week of October 15, 2007. In the month of December, Dan also released a Crazy Loop album called "The Power of Shower". Although it's only available in Romania, it is soon to be released in other countries starting in early 2008. The song "Crazy Loop" reached number 1 on the Romanian Charts. Later, Gary Brolsma, the Numa Numa Kid, used this song for his Numa Three video.
