[edit] Design details

The Colt 9mm SMG is blowback operated rather than the conventional direct impingement gas operation of the AR-15 series rifles, and it fires from a closed bolt.

The overall aesthetics are relatively similar to most AR-15 rifles. Changes include an enlarged brass deflector which replaces the standard AR-15 brass deflector. The magazine well of the receiver is modified using a special adaptor to allow the usage of smaller 9mm magazines. Factory Colt 9mm SMGs are equipped with a 10.5 inch length barrel and M16A1 style upper receiver. The magazines are a copy of the Israeli UZI SMG magazine with a modified locking slot to fit the AR-15's different magazine release button.

All Colt 9mm SMGs have an M16A1 style upper receiver, which means they feature a fixed carry handle with A1 sights. Current Colt production models are the RO635 which features a Safe/Semi/Full Auto selective fire trigger group and the RO639 which features a Safe/Semi/3 round Burst selective fire trigger group. Both are equipped with a 10.5 inch length barrel. The 633 was a modified compact version with a 7 inch (178 mm) barrel and simplified front sight post used by the DEA.

The latest version of the 635 is simply marked SMG 9mm NATO.

[edit] Users

Exploiting the ergonomic similarity to the AR-15 and M16 families, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, U.S. Marshal's Special Operations Group and a number of other Federal agencies have adopted the 635, as have several elite counter-terrorist and military special-operations units. A number of civilian law enforcement Special Weapons and Tactics(SWAT) use the 635 as an entry/close quarters battle weapon due to the 9mm Parabellum being safe against overpenatration, similar to the H&K MP-5. The civilian-legal semi-automatic "carbine" version has found considerable favor in lieu of the shotgun with a growing number of police and sheriff's departments around the country when range is not of concern, mainly in urban areas. The 5.56mm carbines are still favored in patrol cars when shooting would occur at distances over 100 meters.

[edit] Variants

For more details on Colt 9mm SMG variants, see AR-15 variants

The most common model is the 635. The 639 is similar to 635 except it features an M16A2-type trigger with semi-automatic and 3 round burst modes of fire. The 634 is a carbine variant with only the semi-automatic mode of fire. The 633 features an even shorter 7 inch (178 mm) barrel and simplified front sight post.
