[edit] History

Coldfront has its roots in the Stratics IRC Network. Initially the network was founded as the Gaming-IRC network, which later on turned into the Coldfront IRC network. After founding a small but fun IRC network, Coldfront expanded to several game related fansites.

The currently most widely known fansite is based on Kingdom of Loathing, initially running the Kol Marketplace and later on the very successful KoL wiki, passionately ran by a group of volunteers, was merged with the Coldfront network.

Several of the staff members at Coldfront have either roots in the online gaming industry with games like Ultima Online as volunteers, leads, Quality assurance or are currently branched into very popular or anticipated games like EVE Online and Pirates of the Burning sea as Game masters, bughunters and several other positions.

[edit] Characteristics

Coldfront was founded as an open chat network, with only a few common sense rules. Coldfront has chosen a middle ground, shying away from the heavy censorship found on other networks while at the same time forbidding illegal activities such as file sharing, and anti-social behavior such as abuse and racism. Channels on Coldfront are able to be freely moderated as the channel owners and operators see fit, provided they do so within the overarching rules of the network. Coldfront has since been expanded into a fully fledged gaming website, featuring volunteer run fan sub-sites for games such as EVE Online, World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, and other large online games, with the capacity to host many more as dedicated volunteer gamers request them. Coldfront also hosts patches for a small number of popular non-MMO online games.

[edit] Services

Coldfront uses the IRC Services 5 services package, which includes the following features:

  • ChanServ, a channel service bot, is used to protect channel operators and help run the channel. This is convenient for the operators because they do not need to have an operator on the channel all of the time to keep their status.
  • NickServ, a nickname service bot, is used to register and protect user nicknames.
  • MemoServ, a memo service bot, is used to record and deliver messages to users who are currently offline.
  • OperServ is used by IRC Operators.
