Big Tancook Island
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Big Tancook Island is a Canadian island located off the coast of Nova Scotia.
Jurisdictionally part of Lunenburg Municipal District, Big Tancook Island measures 2.4 km wide and 1 km long, making it the largest island in Mahone Bay.
A year-round passenger-only ferry service connects the island with neighbouring Little Tancook Island and the mainland village of Chester.
The island is contiguous with the community of Big Tancook Island (est. population 190). The majority of residents are employed with the fishing industry or ferry service. Students take instruction in the elementary grades at a school on the island, while high school education must be obtained in Chester, requiring use of the ferry service.
