Bhatt Prabhu

Bhatt Prabhu Brahmin ( commanly known as Parabhu in Konkani ) community belongs to Panch Darvida category of Brahmins, and is a sub-caste of Karhade Brahmin community.

It is believed that these people migrated with their Kuldevta from Karhatak ( present day Karad in Maharashtra ) and settled in different parts of Goa in pre-Portuguese period, thus this community gets its name Parabhu, ( par - different, other, bhu - land , literal meaning : migrated from other land ) Bhatt prabhus speak standard Sanskritised Konkani.This comunity is believed to have settled in Goa many hundred years after Brahmins Saraswati Mandal settled in Goa.This community is found only in Goa, especially in Ponda taluka.
