Polite intercourse: some of my correspondents may not be sure how to address a person such as myself. I take no offence whatever at being called 'Ben' - it's an understandable error. However, 'Ben' is of course an honorific. My local friends call me 'MacDui'. (The whole of my name is pronounced: bɛn maxdoo-ee).

[edit] St. K

No problem - it is on my watchlist. Unfortuantely I will not be able to make it to the grill in the city of brotherly love (this time, at least). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:11, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

  • I did enjoy a meal at a fine Scottish restaurant recently. Alas it was not your clan, and there was no haggis in sight. ;-) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:29, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
    • We like to think we have made worthwhile contributions to global culture, including of course international cuisine. Did you try this? Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 17:43, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
      • Sadly they were out of those too, although I have seen similar items at county fairs. If you have nothing better to do, Black Moshannon State Park is up for peer review - mostly the work of Dincher with some contributions from yours truly. Since I already "owe" you a peer review for Joseph Priestley House, please let me know if there is anything I can do for you (and don't feel you have to do the PR - we have one response already, just useful to have more). Thanks Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:17, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
        • Happy to look at the Park, although it may not be today. I have just helped out at Walter de Coventre for the Donation of Peptin and need a break. Am also bogged down at FLC just above Larrys Creek. I might need a hand with Fauna of Scotland if I ever get round to it. Cheers. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 13:21, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
          • Thanks in advance - I will take a look at the FLC and weigh in. I have been doing a lot at peer review lately and didn't look much beyond the Larrys Creek list at FLC. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:31, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
            • I see you are having a bit of work with the FLC, so if you don't have time for the PR, I understand and please don't worry about it. I must admit I fail to see the point of explaining the Dark Ages (from 476 AD on) in an article that ends at 100 BC and will say so in the FLC if you want. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:23, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

It's all great test of patience of course, but hopefully there is progress. As a rule we are good at picking up on style and I fear fairly weak on substance. Perhaps for next April Fool's I'll come up with a GA on a completely invented island or similar. It might take quite a while for anyone to notice. I should get round to the Park sometime this weekend. At first glance it looks great, but I'm sure I can come up with a few tweaks. All the best and thanks for your support. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 10:24, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks very much for your Peer Review - we would appreciate any suggestions you have on species capitalization. I also found some data on the climate. Yours, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 11:49, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Have you seen this "view" from St. Kilda? You are there too (nice view) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:23, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
No I hadn't, and thanks for pointing it out. Do they do them for Pennsylvania? Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 19:35, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
No or at least not yet - all of the ones they have done are here. Most of the "mountains" in Pennsylvania are either actually dissected plateau (Allegheny Plateau) or very long ridges (60 km long or more, Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians). Speaking of the latter, I am trying to teach myself more geology for the neverending FAC and learned reading "Roadside Geology of Pennsylvania" that "The Caledonian Mountains of Great Britain, eastern Greenland and northeastern Scandanavia were originally contiguous with the Appalachians." so I'll say hello to some of your cousins Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:56, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Yes indeed. I have a holiday photo of us all together here although we have rather lost touch since the Jurassic. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 21:21, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Foula

What's H Smith? Anyway, the source is the Sabhal Mòr database (http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/gaidhlig/faclair/sbg/lorg.php), the place name for Foula having been provided to them by Dr Iain Mac an Tàilleir of the Scottish Place Name Soc (he's the chap who provides the Scottish Government with the official Gaelic names of places), not sure how you'd reference that though. Akerbeltz 20:35, 03 April 2008 (GMT)]

Thanks for that - I've put it in as a citation. A wee bit rickety, but much better than nothing. Unfortunately it's not listed at Mac an Tàilleir's http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/vli/language/gaelic/pdfs. H-Smith is Hamish Haswell-Smith whose (2004) The Scottish Islands was already cited in the infobox, but who only provides a Norse name. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 21:15, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Ah, I see. You learn something new every day. It's not really rickety, thing is I don't think he gets to update the stuff he did for the parliament that often so the most up to date source is usually the college database as that gets updated more often. It's still the same source ; ) (if you click on Faic Tùsan on the search form (meaning View Sources) you see that it's him). Akerbeltz 22:43, 03 April 2008 (GMT)]

I'm afraid my Gaelic is all but non-existent. I can find Foula and I can see that Dr T is Faic Tùsan No 49, but when I choose 49 it just takes me to a page of 'A's with no obvious way forward. How do I connect Foula with 49? Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 21:55, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

No problem, it's tricky maneuvering a site not in a language you can read :b I don't think there is a way of creating a link that has Foul Fughlaigh and 49 Dr T on it by default (or even directly to the Foula entry), the website doesn't work like that. What you're getting when you click on 49 is a list of all the entries provided by Dr T (starting with the A's). I'd just link it to the site and leave people to figure it out. If they want to query it, they can always ask on the discussion page. Akerbeltz 23:43, 03 April 2008 (GMT)]

[edit] Re:

Ta for the message. Between you and moi, the most recent DYK turns out to be wrong, even though sourced! Thomas de Rossy (you'll recognize the name, though it's a different one here) went to the holy see and was consecrated! Bah to the Chronicle of Man and its followers! Walter de Coventre? The guy is so much work. I guess he, if he passes, will perhaps be the most obscure FA yet ... certainly among religious figures! Best, Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 18:15, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Y Done They are all obscure to me mate - although you probably think the same about Out Skerries. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 13:15, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Emery Molyneux: FA review

Hi, "Emery Molyneux" is currently undergoing an FA review: see "Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Emery Molyneux". One reviewer has suggested that a fresh pair of eyes go through the article for readability. Since you were the GA reviewer, if you're free would you like to oblige? Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 13:55, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

I have been keeping an eye on it and am hoping to find time to do so soon. I did another FAC this am, have just committed myself to a peer review and have an FLC myself at present. I'll do my best but I don't think it'll be today. Regards, Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 14:47, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

No worries. Thanks! — Cheers, JackLee talk 15:21, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Saxon Orkney

Hack nonsense. This was brought up before, and I commented on it somewhere. Can't remember where though. A giant big YAWN! BTW, you'll need to triple the size of that wind farm article if you want it on DYK. meh. Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 22:50, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

I found my comment, here: User_talk:Mais_oui!#RE:BSW. I'm really sick to the teeth of wikipedia and all its daft editors. If one was actually going to nanny every crank on this site, you wouldn't have time for a life let alone do anything productive on the site. And the thing about crackpot fringe theories is that proper academics never respond to them, so you never get easy to cite debunkings. Orkney and Shetland seem to be one of the biggest magnets of all for this madness. I've heard everything, from Picts who stay'd there only in the summer, to Scandinavian oghams and now to English before they ever existed. Still, even a stopped clock is right twice a day, so who knows. Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 13:10, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Re: (The wind farm thing)

Hi, you're welcome, and thanks for starting the article, I probably wouldn't have come across the subject otherwise. - Bobet 13:33, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Updated DYK query On 10 April 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Beinn an Tuirc windfarm, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

[edit] Help?

I'm tidying up a page (Usurbil) at the moment that someone ran through Babelfish... Ive added an infobox and I'd like to add a label for % of Basque speakers (as the Basque and Spanish versions have) but I just can't get it to work. I've currently added it as a footnote but that doesn't work very well... you couldn't give me a pointer on how to add a label for Density of Basque Speakers to such a box? Thanks. Akerbeltz (talk) 10:58, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm not familiar with this template. If there is no field for this, you could use {{subst:Infobox City}} and then amend it. I'll try and explain if you haven't used this before. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 17:01, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Hm never done that, I got the box from the Donostia page and assumed it would be easier to adjust that. Are these boxes pre-set somehow, or in other words, would it be easier to go to the Donostia page and ask if someone can add that to the box in general? Thanks! Akerbeltz (talk) 12:56, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes they are 'pre-set'. The 'subst' unsets it and allows you to manipulate it, but it can get quite tricky. I think you would be better off asking at Template talk:Infobox Settlement. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 18:33, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Ok I'll do that, thanks! Akerbeltz (talk) 18:49, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Comprehensive long lists‎ discussion

Hello, I noticed that you took part in the recent FLRC for List of Arsenal F.C. players and thought you might be interested in participating in a new discussion. The FLRC was closed as no consensus and it is clear the the issue of incompleteness in longer FLs is not over, so a discussion page has been started here. Please feel free to comment. -- Scorpion0422 21:22, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Big, grey and very fearful

You're right, it is "am Fear ..." rather than "an Fear". I think the article should mention the Yeti thing in passing, because although some people think it represents the same phenomenon (whatever that is!), it's not the most populat theory. Westerners tend to see yeti and sasquatch as animals, rather than guardian spirits/genii loci (sp?) as am Fear Liath is, and sasquatch amongst the Indians. --MacRusgail (talk) 13:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Scotland

Why did you revert my edits? They weren't questionable changes. The way it is now (with your revert) has a political sentence mixed with a geography statement. The next question again mixes political defintion with geography. Do you not agree that it is better to not have them mixed up? That's all I did.78.16.123.86 (talk) 20:49, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

A quick glance at the Archive Summary and talk page will show you that there have been screeds of discussion about the wording of the lead. In my view, the only way to avoid constant edit wars on this page is for users to propose and discuss controversial changes before they are implemented. If you make such a suggestion no doubt it will be taken on its merits. Regards, Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 07:39, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Lady Aleena's RfA

Ben MacDui...Thank you for supporting my nomination for adminship. Through it I have become aware of a great many people who can help me in my future editing endeavors. Congrats on finally doing the flora of Scotland article! Good complement to the Fauna of Scotland one. BTW, did you see the Natural World doc the other week Moose in the Glen? Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 14:14, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, and no I'm afraid I didn't. Was it about rodents or artiodactyls :)? Incidentally, am I right in thinking there is a bit of gap in the historical record re 'The Romans in Scotland' or similar? Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 18:27, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

No, it was about Paul Lister and his plans to reintroduce various types of megafauna back into the country. The stuff I found interesting was the claim that only 5 centuries ago the Highlands were covered in forest (though that's not exactly what medieval sources say in my own knowledge). We have this article, but nothing besides afaik. Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 13:51, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Given with respect and admiration to Ben MacDui for you work on Timeline of prehistoric Scotland, especially for your calm and patient attitude through a long and challenging FLC. Yours, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:04, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Grats, MhicDhuibhe ; ) just something I noticed: on the page the term cleitan is mentioned - unless that is the way the term is spelled in the English literature, I think that should be spelled cleitean. [edit] RE:Evil Empire

What do you think of Scotland in the Iron Age? Bit wooly, but gives more chronological flexibility and reduces the chance of overlap if you move on to other topics. Creates a clear division between other prehistoric topics, such as Scotland in the Bronze Age, where factors like the Romans aren't so conveniently present. Proper coverage in any case would involve discussing a longer earlier period as the Roman era won't make sense otherwise. This is a very complicated and deep subject btw. What kind of resources do you have for it if I may ask? :) You've got the brains to deal with it no doubt, the biggest problem might be resources. Best, Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 19:27, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Well part of the problem with the Iron Age is knowing when it begins. At least the Romans had the decency to arrive and leave in some sort of organised and verifiable way. As for resources.... my chief resource is surprise and fear.. Sorry, my two main resources are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... My three main resources are fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Oh I'll come in again. And thanks for the warning! [edit] Template help

I saw your recent edits to Template:Europe topic and I am hoping you can help with a small but irritating technical problem. We use an assessment template for WikiProject Scottish Islands - Template:WPSI. It comes with a 'comments' section, but there is an annoying glitch. The talk page of an article without a comment on the template (e.g. Whisky Galore) works fine. When you click on the "leave comments here" link it takes you to Editing Talk:Whisky Galore/Comments to leave whatever message may be required. However, for an article with a pre-existing comment e.g. at Talk:Lunga, Firth of Lorn clicking on the "edit" button in the WPSI template takes you to a "Server not found" error page. If you can fix this, tell me how to fix it, or suggest someone who might I'd be very grateful. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 11:18, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Why not have the rating discussions on the regular talk page of each article? That way, anyone reading the discussion page will find it and may be more likely to participate. As it currently stands, a user has to click on a tiny link in a footnote of a notice box, which may reduce the number of participants. I look forward to your reply. The Transhumanist    11:41, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
The advantage is that you can go to the 'by quality' pages e.g. Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Scottish Islands articles by quality/1 and scroll down to view the comments across the project. (Happy to continue the discussion here). Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 11:51, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Is there a similar template that actually works? That would be the easiest place for me to start. The Transhumanist    11:54, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Intriguing - the same problem exists for WP:Scotland e.g. Talk:Order of the Thistle and WP:Australia e.g. Talk:Canberra. Template:physics and Template:maths rating are working at Talk:Blaise Pascal. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 12:19, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Didn't spot your reply because the message alert feature of Wikipedia only works if you reply on the other person's talk page. Didn't expect that you'd require a request to reply on my talk page with every single post in the same message thread. To expedite a conversation, it is best to reply on each others' talk pages. Otherwise it just circumvents the alert feature. I almost never check back on threads, and returned here to report on my progress: I went ahead and fixed the template by removing transclusion - it makes little sense to transclude the comments in fine print - vision gets worse as you get older, so older (and wiser) Wikipedians won't even be able to read the comments. Linking to the comments works just fine. The Transhumanist    12:50, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Many thanks for fixing this - it looks good. A question if I may - I think I know what template 'purgepage' does, but why is it useful here? Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 13:12, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
It forces a refresh of the page (and all nested pages) from the database itself, thereby purging the server cache - or something like that. :) It's mainly intended for pages hosting nested pages that get updated or worked on often, as different users may see different versions unless you "purge the cache". I added it while working on the page. It will be useful if anyone wants to further improve the template, or update the ratings. If you need further help on anything, feel free to ask anytime. ;) The Transhumanist    13:27, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bio nomenclature

You're wading into an old, bitter debate here. This matter remains undecided because, basically, we're all too stubborn to change our habits. It is probably the biggest dispute in the Tree of Life WikiProject. There are various lengthy and ultimately unproductive discussions lying about, but at the moment it's the smaller projects (e.g. WP Birds) that decide the capitalisation. Basically at the moment, it's capitalise common names for birds, undecided for mammals, reptiles and amphibians (many of both), and don't capitalise for plants, etc. Most of the projects have their own conventions on their pages. Hope this helps. Frickeg (talk) 22:34, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I understand that the different Wikiprojects have different schemes for the individual articles - I'm really asking if WP:AUS has any system of its own. Sounds like the answer is 'no'. I'll comment further there as well. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 11:52, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] More moss gathering

Checking half a dozen moss taxoboxes is no trouble at all. I cannot guarantee that the species names will be current, but I can easily check that all the higher-level taxonomy is correct. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:27, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Excellent.
Good - and thanks for DYKing it.

Note, however, that Ceratophyllum demersum is not a bryophyte but a flowering plant. There are two separate groups of plants kown as "hornworts". One of these is a grop of bryophytes, but the other (Ceratophyllum) is a flowering plant. The article on the Flora of Scotland should be amended to correct this. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:30, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Understood. Will fix asap. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 15:52, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Ruhrfisch and I are working on Worlds End State Park for hopefully FA status. It's currently up for Peer Review. Could you take a look at it for us? Dincher (talk) 14:50, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

At this time of year a large yellow orb sometimes appears in the skies above Scotland and the local custom is to venture outside to enjoy this unusual phenomenon. Nevertheless, I will try to take a look sometime this week. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 12:17, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Enjoy! The same orb was present for the photos of the park in question (none are snowy). Thanks as always, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:06, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the PR. I will get to tweaking it later. Dincher (talk) 14:14, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

I think I have addressed most of your concerns. Thanks for the great review! Dincher (talk) 00:05, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

I was on a breif wikibreak - thanks too and I will double check the few points Dincher was unsure of. As always, please let me know if there is ever anything I can do. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:42, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WPSI infoboxes

I've been doing more on Commons recently, but will get round to adding more island infoboxes. I don't see why you removed the links from the "to do" list. Finavon (talk) 11:35, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

A brainstorm - I have self-reverted. Thanks for spotting this - and also the assessments. Cheers. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 14:12, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WP:V

Please try to use some more references for the article Foula. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 13:51, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

I am always happy to collaborate on island articles. Do you have any particular references in mind we could use? Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 14:02, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Edinburgh wikimeet

Hi mate. You indicated that you might be able to make it. We;ve now settled on a venue (I hope) so maybe we'll see you there. Best, Asty (137.195.250.2 (talk) 23:01, 5 June 2008 (UTC))

[edit] Skye GA nomination on hold

Hi MacDui, I reviewed Skye and put it on hold until the climate section can be expanded somewhat. Other than that it is a very good article, although I made some more suggestions for improvement (that do not need to be done to reach GA). You have a week to make the improvements, although I think they should be fairly easy to do. Please ask if anything is unclear or if you feel this is an unfair assessment. Yours, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:13, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

I thought even the first draft on climate was sufficient and have now passed Skye as a Good Article - congratulations! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 10:44, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Many thanks indeed, including the bonus FA review! I have added some slightly better (with minor but curious differences) climate data and will look at the remaining comments in due course. All the best. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 11:07, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Glad to be of help - thank you for all your helpful peer reviews. I had to checkle when I saw the GA Geography Islands, all Scottish for some odd reason ;-) Keep up the good work, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 17:10, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Geology of Scotland

This article has come a long way since you became involved, congratulations on that. I will try to give it a thorough going over in the next few weeks before holidays intervene. I'm particularly aiming to expand the Precambrian part and maybe brush up some of the tectonics. Cheers, Mikenorton (talk) 13:16, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Excellent - I look forward to your input. The article could definitely do with some professional input. Please note I have been considering it as a possible FA. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 18:53, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
