Benidorm is a British television comedy that is produced by Tiger Aspect for ITV and written by Derren Litten, co-writer of The Catherine Tate Show, exploiting the working-class stereotype of this popular tourist destination. It first aired on Thursday February 1, 2007 at 10pm. A second series of Benidorm was announced on March 1, 2007 and aired Friday 28 March 2008 at 9:00pm - 9:30pm, featuring 8 episodes in comparison with the first series that only featured 6. Series 1 of Benidorm was nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Sitcom category of the 2008 awards which took place at the London Palladium on April 20, 2008.

Benidorm was filmed at the Hotel Sol Pelicanos-Ocas in Benidorm and many of the extras featured in the series are local expats. The Neptune Bar where most of the cabaret scenes are shown was in fact shot in Morgan's Tavern bar across the road from the hotel due to lack of space in the hotel bars. The reception area shown on screen was shot in the secondary reception of the Buena Vista apartments.

In April 2008, the show's writer Derren Litten was embroiled in controversy when the Sunday Mirror newspaper revealed a leaked e-mail sent by him to ITV executives in response to a viewer complaint. Litten suggested viewer Sue Fisher should "go fuck herself with the fat end of a pineapple".[1] An ITV spokesman said: "This is clearly a private email. ITV responded to the viewer in an appropriate manner."
