The Battle of Barren Hill, was fought on May 20, 1778, near Barren Hill, Pennsylvania (present-day Lafayette Hill), as part of the Philadelphia campaign of the American Revolutionary War. In the skirmish action, the British attempted to capture the Marquis de La Fayette, who had been sent across the Schuylkill River with a force of 2,200 troops to prevent the British from attacking Washington's encampment at Valley Forge. La Fayette was able to avoid capture, and successfully retreated his forces back across the Schuylkill with few casualties.
