Area code 423

Area Code 423 is an area code in Tennessee that covers the cities of two separate and disconnected portions of East Tennessee. On the north is Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport (more commonly known as the Tri-Cities); on the south lies Chattanooga and Cleveland.

This area code was split off from Area code 615 in 1995 consisting of the eastern third of the state. 615 was left with just the middle third of the state, and has since split again.
Area code 865 (Knoxville area) broke off from this area code in the year 1999.
