Alien vs Predator is a first-person shooter video game that was to be released for the Atari Lynx around 1994, but was cancelled when Atari dropped support of the Lynx. It was to be based on the Dark Horse Comics cross-over of the same name. As in the successful Atari Jaguar incarnation, the game was to potentially allow the player to choose one of three characters: an Alien, Predator, or Colonial Marine. However, due to distinct differences between the two discovered beta versions, debate continues as to whether the Lynx was able to handle all three characters, or whether the code was later pared back to accommodate only two.
A beta version of the game exists and a ROM image is available on the internet; however, it only contains two of the three characters from the Jaguar title. A single known prototype copy of the title containing all three characters, Alien included, was sold in 2006 to a private, and unnamed, collector. It is not known definitively whether this unique copy dates before or after the widely-released ROM; however, screenshots of this unique variant do exist on the Internet. [1]
In 2007, the one-of-a-kind 3 character variant made it to the hands of a atariage.com user, and was sold in a private auction.[2]
