Al Qadarif (also called Gedarif) (Arabic: القضارف) is the capital of the state of Al Qadarif in Sudan. It lies on the road that connects Khartoum with Gallabat on the Ethiopian border. The Distance between Gedarif and the capital (Khartoum) is about 410 km. The city is surrounded by a group of mountains from three sides. The name of the city came from an Arabic term means who finished can move quickly. Other people say it came from an Arabic equivalent to mountains around. The rainy season extends between 3-4 months. The average annual rainfall is around700-900mm. The city represent an excellent example for the intermingled ethnicities through the middle of Sudan. Recently, a university has been established in it. The main feature of the city from old times is the grain silo built by the Russian to store sorghum (Dura).
The Scottish explorer James Bruce (who calls the town Teawa) passed through the town in 1772. He records its sheikh, Fidele, was a vassal of the Kingdom of Sennar.
