He was not simply arrested by the french, in fact his airplane was intercepted over international waters by a squadron of NATO fighter jets and forced to land in France, which would count as aerial piracy.
I have found that he was born actually on December 25, 1916. See Algeria: A Revolution that Failed by Arslan Humbaraci, page 96.
