[edit] Welcome to the Wikipedia
Welcome, newcomer!
Here are some useful tips to ease you into the Wikipedia experience:
- First, take a look at the Wikipedia Tutorial, and perhaps dabble a bit in the test area.
- When you have some free time, take a look at the Manual of Style and Policies and Guidelines. They can come in very handy!
- Remember to use a neutral point of view!
- If you need any help, feel free to post a question at the Help Desk
- Explore, be bold in editing pages, and, most importantly, have fun!
Also, here are some odds and ends that I find useful from time to time:
- Wikipedia:Policy Library
- Wikipedia:Utilities
- Wikipedia:Cite your sources
- Wikipedia:Verifiability
- Wikipedia:Wikiquette
- Wikipedia:Civility
- Wikipedia:Conflict resolution
- Wikipedia:Brilliant prose
- Wikipedia:Pages needing attention
- Wikipedia:Peer review
- Wikipedia:Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense
- Wikipedia:Village pump
- Wikipedia:Boilerplate text
Feel free to ask me anything the links and talk pages don't answer. You can most easily reach me by posting on my talk page.
You can sign your name on any page by typing 4 tildes, likes this: ~~~~.
Best of luck, and have fun! ClockworkSoul 04:25, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I appriciate the welcome! I'm finding some of your tips and links quite useful. Adm58 04:32, Feb 28, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Edits to Waterloo, Iowa
You should rethink your edits to Waterloo, Iowa -- why would you remove the names of the current and former mayors? Come on, think about it... 65.103.53.243
- I'll have to go back and check that out, I believe I meant to move them to a different location on the page. Thanks for the note. Feel free to revert that edit if it's a problem. Adm58 04:01, Mar 1, 2005 (UTC)
- Update: I've added a "Government" section to the page, briefly mentioning the city council makeup and the former mayors that I had removed. They fit more appropriate here than under Notable natives, I think of Notable natives for celebrities or famous people rather than local government officials. Hope this helps. Adm58 04:11, Mar 1, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Public domain image problems
Hi there! I noticed that you have placed some of your image contributions in the public domain. Unfortunately, it turns out that one can't place their work in the public domain, and so these image tags have been deprecated. I encourage you to replace the public domain tags on your images with free-use tags, which are similar in spirit, such as {{CopyrightedFreeUse-User}}. Please reply on my talk page or Wikipedia talk: You can't grant your work into the public domain if you have any questions. Thanks. Deco 23:46, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I am now using the {{CopyrightedFreeUse}} tag on my images. Thanks for the tip. I couldn't figure out how to get the {{CopyrightedFreeUse-User}} tag to display my name. Any advice? Adm58 06:46, Apr 9, 2005 (UTC)

- People on the Wikipedia:Village pump (policy) and the mailing list disagree with Deco's assesment. You might want to keep an eye on the related discussion. -Mgm|(talk) 11:36, Apr 9, 2005 (UTC)

- Interesting, thanks for the help. Kind of makes me wish Deco had given me the full story. I don't see why one cannot place one's work into the public domain, but if you technically can't, I suppose I see Deco's logic. -Adm58 17:09, Apr 9, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cburnett's admin nomination
I was nominated for administrator and I'd like to hear your opinion at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Cburnett. Cburnett 07:28, Apr 24, 2005 (UTC)
- Support. Adm58 01:29, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

- Thanks. :) I left my 2 cents about Central College on the talk page. If the poster of the "recent development" ignores consensus then it should probably go for protection. Cburnett 01:49, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

-
- Alright, thanks a lot. Do you think this is something I should remove now, or wait for more discussion? I suppose I need to better familiarize myself with some of the rules. Adm58 02:00, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

- Well, it's not a high profile article so I guess there's no reason to act *now*, but it would appear that those adding it are even newer to WP than you so they're likely to know much less. If it were me, I'd trim out the blatant copied stuff first, see what's left, and maybe summarize it if necessary. If they revert and don't offer any discussion then see about getting it protected. [edit] WikiProject Iowa
Hello, I noticed that you edited an article related to, or expressed interest in Iowa. Therefore, I was wondering if you would be interested in joining (proposed) WikiProject Iowa? If so, please add your name to "Interested Wikipedians" at Proposed WikiProject Iowa --Tim4christ17 03:41, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Newtoniowacourthouse.jpg
I'm rather new at this so I appologize if this is the wrong procedure. I believe that this image violates Wikipedia's policy on fair use of images. The building still exists and it would be rather easy to take another photograph of it. According to the wikipedia page on Fair Use, "the image or content can only be used if it is not replaceable with a free content image of equal or better quality". Since the Newton Courthouse building still exists in approximately the same state as shown in this image, I think that it would be easy to take another picture. Therefore, I believe this picture violages Wikipedia's Fair Use policy. --Smiller933 05:05, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] AfD nomination of Vedic City, Iowa
I've nominated Vedic City, Iowa, an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that Vedic City, Iowa satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Vedic City, Iowa and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Vedic City, Iowa during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you.DGG 05:32, 5 March 2007 (UTC) (actually, another ed. nominated it for speedy & I sent it to AfD instead for discussion as I didn't think it obviously speedy)DGG 05:33, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
- Result was keep. Adm58 14:48, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Reverts to {{davematthewsband}}
Please stop reverting edits to {{davematthewsband}} made by other editors. Reverting is not a move that should be made if you simply disagree with another editor contribution. Although you do not feel that the template should have articles with non-performers in the second row, there are other editors that may feel it is appropriate, and it is very important to assume good faith. Believe it or not, there are other artist templates out there, such as {{U2}} that do feature links to articles about non-performers in the second line. If you disagree with an edit that has been made on a template or article that is not vandalism, please post a message on the respective talk page instead of simply reverting the edit made. Reverting is not a decision which should be taken lightly. Please read Help:Reverting#When to revert for more information. –Crashintome4196 20:01, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- Your warning is inappropriate. It implies a pattern of many reverts to many edits by many authors. That is not the case. In fact, I did not even revert your edit, but merely altered a portion of it, and this only occured a single time. I also did not assume you lacked good faith in your edit, I simply thought it was wrong, going against the vast majority of musician templates.
- In regards to the {{U2}} template, it appears that the non-performers were added at a time when that second line read "Additional Staff"... (below the line "Bandmembers" [1]) Now that those labels have been removed, I would suggest that the U2 template may also need to be revisted for clarity's sake. Adm58 20:42, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:EricClapton461OceanBoulevar.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:EricClapton461OceanBoulevar.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Save_Us_229 15:37, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:GetluckyLB.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:GetluckyLB.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 23:12, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:DMBFolsom.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:DMBFolsom.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. –Dream out loud (talk) 22:45, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
