[edit] Kulintang music

You shouldn't add the same piece of text on Kulintang music to practically every related article. It's enough to give a sentence or two under the appropriate section and then link to the article which provides a more detailed discussion. --seav 11:06, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

On that note, I've taken the liberty of creating Template:S Filipino instruments; now, you can just type in {{S Filipino instruments}} to an article to insert it, and if you want to alter the template, you only have to make one edit! I really hope you've got more instruments in the works, but even if you don't, it's always useful to reduce code redundancy. Anyway, as I went through Wikipedia to find articles to substitute the template, I noticed the same concern seav had above: it's not so good to insert the same text in lots of places. I'll try to help fix that now... Melchoir 07:14, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks seav and Melchoir for your insightful info. I took the liberty of going over all the articles with the culture section and referencing them back to the Music of the Philippines and Kulintang articles. Much of the repeative text was removed. Sorry Melchoir if I wasn't able to read your message in time for the revisions. The template would be a nice tool to use but ot all the province in the Philippines have the same groups of people in them so it would be hard to make just one edit. (For instance, the Maguindanaon have different terminology for ensemble instruments than those of the Maranao. Usually they like being kept separate.) PhilipDM 12:02, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New articles

I just ran across your article Kutiyapi. It's really well done, thank you for writing it. I've been wanting to do some articles on non-western string instruments but I don't have good sources for them right now, and not much personal experience. I'm glad to see some of them are getting the coverage they need now. Cheers, Mak (talk) 05:41, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Writing tips

I'm in awe of your ability to create so many articles from scratch! Maybe I can help out a bit by pointing out a few items from the incredibly long and confusing Wikipedia:Manual of Style that could make your life a little easier:

  • From Wikipedia:Manual of Style (links): You don't need to link the same word multiple times in an article; actually, unless you have a special reason, it's better to link a word only the first time you use it.
  • I don't know where it's written down, but an article shouldn't link to itself or to a redirect that points to itself.
  • From Wikipedia:Guide to layout, although it doesn't come out and say it: If you use a link prominently enough in the body of your article, you don't need to include it in a "See also" section.
  • From Wikipedia:Captions: Try to keep image captions succinct. You don't have to duplicate too much nearby text from the article.
  • From Wikipedia:Lead section: The first use of the article title should be in bold.

I think that's all. Thanks again! Melchoir 07:42, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sandugo and Sandugo Festival

Hi! Please comment on whether there is a need to make a separate article for the Blood Compact/Sandugo and a separate one for the Sandugo Festival.--Pinay06 08:36, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Definitely should lead to two articles. Take the History part, in addition to the information about the Bohol seal and make that the new article about the Blood Compact/Sandugo. Leave the rest for the Sandugo Festival and leave a sentence about why each one is related to the other in each article. Great Article by the way... kinda like, Thanksgiving Day here in America... the pact broken by one side in the end. PhilipDM 09:08, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! I did as you suggested. You may check Sandugo Festival and Sandugo. Comments, edits, images, etc. are very welcome...--Pinay06 19:30, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Award

I award you this barnstar

for help with Sandugo and Sandugo Festival articles, and maybe many more..--Pinay06 10:05, 1 December 2006 (UTC).

O you shouldn't have. I was merely giving my best suggestion for the article. Actually, now that Sandugo went through the DYK process, I suggest you try getting it a GA Nomination. This is the criteria and i believe it fits all those qualifications. If you think it's good enough nominate in on the candidates page, in the world history section. Follow the instructions on the candidates page. Your article should have a GA nominee like the one I'm working on, Agung. Highest Thanks. PhilipDM 19:06, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
I do honestly think you deserve it. Your suggestion provided a start off point for the article. I wouldn't have done it at that time! So, my gratitude. As for the GA nomination, I will see what I can do. I still have to do some more improvement, and research on the current conflict on the actual location or site of the Sandugo in Bohol and incorporate it prior to nomination. BTW, your article on Agung is really good!!! You did such a good job! Congratulations! Pinay06 02:15, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Kasi, alam ko you are also into music di ba? Kung gusto mo i interview pa different si AZ, let me know so I can hook you guys up or i-check mo sa website ng Star of the Sea and telephone number nya. Ang kaisa isang number dyan will surely lead you to him or his extension or his voice mail. LoL! I will also tell him to expect you, which I already actually did when I first emailed you ages ago (wikiland time). [edit] Kulintang

Hey, nice work on the article. It's full cited now. — Indon (reply) — 10:37, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Yup. Still working on it. I'll let you all know when i'm done. PhilipDM 10:43, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
Wow, I am amazed. I didn't know that Kulintang migrated :-). Overall I really like it, you're a good editor. Just a minor thing, isn't it a little bit over-cited? Some sentences are cited with more than 2 citations. I think if a sentence is not controversial and not likely to be challenged, then it is all right to left it without citations. Furthermore, if we write a paragraph/section that comes from the same source, then putting only one citation at the beginning of the sentence is enough. Some people will get irriated (I know some editors who hate footnotes) with the flood of superscripted numbers. I can help you to reduce the footnote but still keep the article well-cited if you don't mind me to edit it. — Indon (reply) — 09:15, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it has been reserached through etymology that it came from Sunda and marched to Mindanao via trade. That's how all the names are similiar.

Yeah... Basically I put down ALL the sources down I got for every written text about kulintang music in that article. I'd rather overcite becuase its much easier to remove such and such citition than underciting and finding out where such and such citation came from. Also, even if we do remove citation... in case someone has a question about a certain statement and wants to know where it came from... it's easy now just to go back to the version where everything is cited and find it.

If you wanna remove some citations in the same paragraph from the same source, please be my guess. I just wanna find a way that we could push this to featured status. It's an interesting topic. PhilipDM 18:19, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Articlehistory template

I hope you don't mind that I reverted your additions to the articlehistory template, which caused it to show in the error category I monitor. [edit] Kulintang FAC

Hey Philip, your welcome for the copy edit to date, but as you admit the prose needs a lot of work to bring it up to standard. I'll edit further over the coming days, but I suggest that a polite request at Wikipedia:WikiProject League of Copyeditors is in order. You have already completed the hard work in researching, structuring, citing etc, but the article does need some polish yet. BTY are you satisified that Sandy's concerns re WP:MOS have been met? Also can you let me know what you think of this edit; my reasoning is that it improves the flow of the article not to have a large table so soon after the lead. Anyway, take care. Ceoil 22:15, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey Ceoil. Actually, I'm was just about to fix up the reference kinks that Sandy mentioned. It should take about an hour. As for the WP:MOS, I think, (not sure) if i met them. She didn't say I hadn't. As for the prose and the structure of the references, I think that's out of my hands now... i'll let the folks at Wikipedia:WikiProject League of Copyeditors deal with that. And about that edit, the only reason I am reluctant to place the chart at the bottom like that is becuase that chart is related to the Geographic extent paragraph. Both deal with the extent of kulintang ensemble throughtout the Asia region. None of the other sub-paragraphs do. PhilipDM 22:26, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Philip, looking forward to your work on the refs. Having though it through, I'm now sure that even if the table and the Geographic extent section are connected, the table should still function as an appendix and appear at the foot of the article. I'm reading through the article again at the moment, have a few sentences I'm unsure as to the meaning, will post Q's here later. Best, Ceoil 22:49, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Cool. Will love to hear what's on your mind, Regards. PhilipDM 22:52, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Posted kulintang on Wikipedia:WikiProject League of Copyeditors. Also, good job on the Filipino instrument template. Looks better now. PhilipDM 08:05, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
