In the Warhammer series of fantasy fiction, the Phoenix Kings are the rulers of the Elven Isle of Ulthuan. To gain this right they must first pass through the Sacred Flame at The Shrine of Asuryan. They emerge transformed, marked by the power of the Asur's principal deity. There have been eleven Phoenix Kings to date. This is not a hereditary position, and is often fraught with politics and compromise. The first and greatest Phoenix King was Aenarion the Defender. It is generally agreed that Caledor the First is the next greatest monarch after Aenarion, though it it also generally agreed that Caledor II, Caledor's son, was the worst monarch to have ever been crowned.
