Fillmore East

Fillmore East war der Name eines Musiktheaters in New York. Schon drei Jahre zuvor war das Fillmore West in San Francisco gegründet worden.
1965 eröffnete Bill Graham einen Rock-Tanzpalast in San Francisco an der Ecke Fillmore und Geary Street. 1968 zog das erfolgreiche Musiktheater in den ehemaligen Carousel Ballroom an der Market Street und nannte sich Fillmore West. Am 8. März 1968 nahm das Fillmore East in der New Yorker Second Avenue seinen Betrieb auf.
Über mehrere Jahre hinweg trat die Elite der Rock-Szene in den beiden Fillmore-Clubs auf. Als die Gagenforderungen immer weiter stiegen, schloss Bill Graham das Fillmore East am 27. Juni 1971 und später im gleichen Jahr das Fillmore West. Zu den vielen Rockbands und -musikern, die im Fillmore East oder West Live-Aufnahmen machten, gehören unter anderem:
- The Allman Brothers Band, Frank Zappa, Derek and the Dominos, Cream, Ten Years After, The Doors, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Procol Harum, Santana, Al Kooper und Mike Bloomfield, Country Joe and the Fish, Miles Davis, Grateful Dead, H. P. Lovecraft, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, The Who.
Nach dem Tod seines Gründers Bill Graham bei einem Hubschrauberabsturz 1991 wurde das Fillmore West an der Ecke Geary/Fillmore Street wiederöffnet. Es ist heute wieder eine der populärsten Konzertstätten San Franciscos. Besonders beeindruckend sind die mit Original-Konzertpostern aus vier Jahrzehnten Rockmusik geschmückten Wände an vielen Stellen des Clubs.
