Hello, I am returning to Wikipedia after an unexpectedly busy non-Wikipedia month, and am ready to put together the "Languages of Bangladesh" map you mentioned on my Commons talk page (here).

For which article(s) will you be using this map? Something on the Bengla Wikipedia? Elsewhere?? Both??

The Ehtnologue maps are very complex -- there are 39 languages used in Bangladesh. As you may be able to see from the statement on my user page, I don't like to make complex maps, but rather ones that can be easily read from within the article.

So, I'm thinking that I should attempt to create a map which shows the language families of Bangladesh, perhaps with a special color for Bengali (or Bengla), rather than a map with dozens of labels.

Thanks for your response. My concern, Zaheen, is with the labels. I dislike using dozens of labels, since they are difficult to read from within the article. I'm curious about this map. It shows various tribal languages covering many parts of Bangladesh. However, about 95-99% of Bangladeshis speak Bangla, so the map needs to represent the linguistic demographics proportionately. For example, what percentage of the people of Cox's Bazar (lower right corner of map) speak Arakanese such that the region is marked under the Arakanese color? Same goes for the Northwestern part of the country. Also, what percentage of the population of the inhabitants of centre-north are Garo language speakers? A very large portion of the area is marked under Garo language ... but is the percentage of Garo language speakers so high there? Ragib, the map doesn't intend to encode the number of the speakers of a particular language, but rather tries to show the approximate geographical extent of a particular language. The demographic data that you are talking about is not at our disposal, and even if we had such data, that would complicate the current map. Regarding your most recent suggestions, yes, I will add "Oraon" and would be excited about making a Bengali (or "Bangla", as you Bengalis call it) version of it.
