[edit] Details
28 Costumes were born out of a conversation about waste in the back seat of a parked car in Liverpool in 2004. That was the day the singer Chris McIntosh and guitarist Tony Reilly met. Without knowing the full extent of what lay ahead, they recruited the then rhythm section, Nick Hoare (drums) and Paul Green (bass) and curiously came up with the name 28 Costumes taken from a book about a starving 18th century actor.
After a few jam sessions the band got straight into a studio and laid down 12 tracks in 5 days. They were released 6 months later as their debut album ‘Fake Death Experience’ and received rave reviews.
2 further singles (You Excite Me, Inside Outside) were recorded and released in 2006 and 2 EPs (Die EP, Electrical Fever EP) came out in 2007. With relentless touring and radio support from Huw Stephens, Steve Lamaq and Janice Long the Costumes broadened their awareness in the public. 400 shows later, some with the likes of Maximo Park, Editors, Bloc Party, Art Brut, Futureheads, some performing strange medleys with The Flaming Lips at SXSW, and some 4000 capacity arena gigs in Germany, the stars have fully aligned in the sign of 28.
4 tremendous shows in Austin and with 6 nights on barely any sleep in a hotel room one Costume went awol. Paul Green long time friend, sublime bassist, most amazing backing singer and fastest talker in the world decided to leave the band in March 07. For almost a year Geoff Williams stepped in but it wasn’t until lead singer Chris bumped into a beautiful woman called Jo in a men’s toilet that a perfect bassist was found. It became apparent when Jo picked up the bass guitar that she was the missing link in the band’s internal chemical chain.
Since November heads have been down writing and rehearsing new material in their rehearsal space The Punchtank on the Dock Road, Liverpool. Despite various freak calamities occurring including a mattress falling 20ft and smashing one of lead guitarist Tony’s favourite guitars….determination and musical inspiration alone spurned the band on in this derelict (and clearly dangerous!) unheated 19thtcentury tea warehouse. The results are 28 Costumes delivering some of their best material to date.
They are currently recording with producer Andy Donovan from Elle S’Apelle to see their much awaited 2nd album come to light. First fruits from their collaboration will be the double A side single Erika/Death Mask out June 16th 2008. 28 Costumes will be touring the UK from mid may including a performance at Glastonbury.
