Croatia is a country in Europe. Its capital city is Zagreb.
The Republic of Croatia is a small country between the Mediterranean Sea and Central Europe. It was one of the republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, but has been independent since 1991. It is a candidate for membership in the European Union and received NATO membership invitation on 3 April 2008. On October 17 2007 Croatia became a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2008-2009 term.
A very long time ago, in this territory lived Illyrian people and they were ruled by Rome. In the seventh century AD, Slavs had come and lived there. Eleventh century Croatia was ruled by Austria-Hungary until 1918. In 1918 it became a part of Yugoslavia which was taken over in World War II. In 1945, Croatia became a part of new, communist Yugoslavia (Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) which collapsed in 1991. Since then, Croatia is independent.
