Southeastern University is a private, Christian, undergraduate and graduate institution of higher education located in Lakeland, Florida in the USA. It was established in 1935 as a Bible college, and became a liberal arts college in 1970. The University has formerly been known as South-Eastern Bible Institute (1935-1956), South-Eastern Bible College (1956-1977), and Southeastern College of the Assemblies of God (1977-2005). It is still affiliated with the Assemblies of God, a Protestant, Pentecostal denomination. [1]

Official enrollment for the 2006-07 academic year was 2,911 students representing 43 states and more than 20 foreign countries. More than 20 percent of the students are ethnic minorities. Students come from varied academic backgrounds. Before enrolling at Southeastern, students have attended public, private and Christian schools; others have been homeschooled. They come from a variety of denominations, though approximately 40% are from an Assemblies of God background. The top states represented are Florida, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Connecticut, Washington, Delaware, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. .[2]

Southeastern offers 45 programs leading to bachelor's and master's degrees, including an MBA. All students are required to complete 54 hours of general education course work in addition to their major. The school is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.[3]

Southeastern University owes a great debt to a multiplied number of educators who laid the groundwork of all that it has become today. Time would fail to mention them all, but eminent professors, widely known and respected in their denomination, such as J. Bashford Bishop, Ruth Breush and Crandall Miller have passed from this life, but will never be forgotten. Their work lives on after them.

The president of Southeastern is Mark Rutland, Ph.D., a highly sought-after speaker and author who also hosts a daily syndicated Christian radio program called Herald of Joy. [4]

During the tenure of Dr. Rutland several new buildings have been built and the enrollment has increased substantially. Numerous majors have been added to the curriculum. Southeastern University is expected to offer doctoral degrees in various subject areas over the next 5-10 years.
