[edit] Composition
In November 1969, the Wilson's father Murry Wilson sold the copyrights to the band's songs to Irving Almo for approximately $700,000.[1] In April 1992, just after Brian Wilson had won a lawsuit which recovered many of the copyrights to his songs, Mike Love filed a lawsuit against Brian Wilson claiming that he had not been given credit, and therefore hadn't received royalties, on over thirty of the band's songs, many of them hit singles.[2] One of these songs was "She Knows Me Too Well", which was one of many songs around this time that Mike claimed he had not been given credit for. The song was originally credited solely to Brian Wilson but Mike Love claimed that he had a hand along with Brian in writing the lyrics. Mike Love won the lawsuit and the song-writing credit was amended, therefore ensuring future royalties on all of the songs that he had claimed he had a hand in writing.
[edit] Recording
The song was recorded over two sessions at Western Recorders Studio in 1964, both engineered by Chuck Britz and produced by Brian Wilson. The first session took place on August 5 which was most likely the recording of the instrumental track. Then on August 8, the vocals were recorded. The background vocals are doubled, just as they are on most Beach Boys songs. However, Brian's lead vocal is one of the rare occasions on a Beach Boys song that the lead vocal isn't double-tracked.
The instrumental track featured Carl Wilson on both lead and rhythm electric guitars, Alan Jardine on electric bass guitar, Brian Wilson on acoustic upright piano and Dennis Wilson on drums. The song features Brian Wilson on lead vocal and Brian, Carl & Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and Alan Jardine on backing vocals.
On the Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 7 (1964) The Alternate "Today" Album, Vol. 1 bootleg, various recording sessions were released in high quality. Four takes of the instrumental track plus rehearsals were released on this bootleg as well as the two backing vocals overdubs and Brian's lead vocal overdub.
[edit] Single release
In August 1964, "She Knows Me Too Well" was released in the United States as the B-side of the "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)" single. The single, the band's tenth in the United States, peaked at number 9 position on the Billboard charts. The song was also released in July 1966 in the United Kingdom again as the B-side of the "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)" single, which was the band's sixth single in the United Kingdom. The single didn't fair as well, but still peaked at number 27 on the charts.
