[edit] In Char's Counterattack

Two Jagd Doga mobile suits appear in the theatrical film Char's Counterattack - the first and only appearance in an official animation to date - and employed by the Neo Zeon forces under Char Aznable. Both Jagd Dogas are operated by Newtype pilots Gyunei Guss[3] and Quess Paraya,[4] and both were destroyed before the end of the Second Neo Zeon War at the film's conclusion.[5]

The Jagd Doga is a special-purpose mobile suit for Neo Zeon Newtype pilots, based on the frame of the Geara Doga general purpose unit (though its outward appearance differs significantly).[6] As such, it is equipped with a psycommu system, allowing the pilot to control the Jagd Doga's six funnel weapons. Mounted on the large shoulder armors, these funnels are equipped with a beam gun and can engage enemy targets outside of visual range, operated by the pilot's brainwaves as opposed to easily-jammed radio communication.[7][8] They are of the same type mounted on Char Aznable's personal mobile suit, the MSN-04 Sazabi. Standard armament features a beam saber with an attached heat knife, a half-dozen missiles stored in the shoulder armor, and a quartet of mega particle cannons positioned in the arm-mounted shield.[9] Other weapons varied from unit to unit.

The first unit, which sports an aquamarine color with gold trim and a prominent antenna on its head, is piloted by artificially-enhanced cyber-Newtype Gyunei Guss, and equipped with a beam assault rifle mounting an attached grenade launcher.[9] Gyunei used this mobile suit to fight Amuro Ray thrice, first in the prototype RGZ-91 Re-GZ, and later in the custom-engineered RX-93 Nu Gundam for two separate fights. Amuro bested him in the third engagement, completely destroying the Jagd Doga with a single beam rifle shot to the back. The second unit, painted red with silver trim, was assigned to the powerful Newtype Quess Paraya after she defected to the Neo Zeon rebellion. This unit was equipped with a potent beam-based mega Gatling gun.[6] After being damaged in combat, Quess abandoned this unit and subsequently came to use the gargantuan mobile armor Alpha Azieru.[5]

[edit] Other appearances and beyond

The Jagd Doga appears on page 28 of the 1993 manga Mobile Suit Gundam in UC 0099: Moon Crisis, by Masafumi Matsuura, along with a medley of other Neo Zeon mobile suits. It features both the prominent antenna of the Gyunei unit and mega Gatling gun of the Quess unit.

As with other mobile suits from the movie, the Jagd Doga received two 1/144th-scale model kits (one in each color scheme) in 1988[10][11], and likewise a pair of Mobile Suit in Action (MSiA) figures in 2002[12][13]. Both Jagd Dogas were featured in the recent 1/200th-scale "High Complete Model Progressive" - HCM Pro - lineup in 2006[14][15]. The Jagd Doga, in both Quess and Gyunei colors, joined the 1/144-scale High Grade Universal Century lineup in October 2007[16][17]; it is the first Char's Counterattack mobile suit featured in the series.[18][19]. Expensive, high-quality resin kits have been manufactured by B-Club[20].

The Jagd Doga is one of many mechanical designs used on the long-running Super Robot Wars franchise by Banpresto. Both the green and yellow "Gyunei" design and the red-and-white "Quess" design have appeared in several Super Robot Wars games. As with just about all Gundam units, they are classified as "real robots" within the game's "real robot/super robot" categories.[1]
