Montague is an unincorporated community in central Montague County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Montague County,[1] and as of the 1990 census had a population of 400. It is pronounced "mon-TEG."

Montague was created in 1858, and was named for Daniel Montague, an early surveyor. By 1880 the town had grown to match its current size, and it was incorporated as a town in 1886. But, the town was bypassed by the two railroads that passed through the county. By 1900, the residents voted to disincorporate the town.
By 1947 Montague's decline halted when the population reached a low of 284. As highway traffic replaced the railroads, a modest recovery began and the community was growing again by 1970.
