Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nagoya Main Line (名古屋本線 Nagoya Honsen?) is a railway line operated by Nagoya Railroad (Meitetsu), between Toyohashi Station, Toyohashi City and Meitetsu Gifu, Gifu. All the stations accept Tranpass, a prepaid magnetic card.
The line is the most important line of Meitetsu. From its opening, the line rivaled Tōkaidō Main Line in Chūkyō Metropolitan Area (Greater Nagoya). The service of Nagoya Line overrode that of Tōkaidō Main Line in the past, but after the rivaling operator changed from JNR to JR Central, the competition became much more fierce.
Due to historical reasons, the line shares its track between Hirai Signal Box and Toyohashi Station with JR Iida Line. The agreement between two companies prohibits Meitetsu to have more than 6 trainsets per hour on the 3.8 km shared tracks. Consequently, local trains cannot reach Toyohashi. Instead, they terminate at Ina.
Many branch lines of Meitestu have through services to/from Nagoya Line. Toyokawa Line, Nishio Line, Tokoname Line (which has its through services with Airport Line, Kōwa Line, and Chita Line), and Inuyama Line all have through services bound for Meitetsu Nagoya, making the segment around the station extremely busy. Between Biwajima Junction and Kanayama, 26 trainsets go through per an hour, even at daytime.
