Hartshead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hartshead

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hartshead is a village in the county of West Yorkshire, England, west of Dewsbury and near Hartshead Moor.

The village has pre-Norman Conquest origins; the Walton Cross dated from the 8th century.

The Revd. Patrick Brontë met his wife Maria Branwell here in 1811 whilst he was parson of St Peter's Church. They were married in Guiseley and became the parents of Anne Brontë, Charlotte Brontë and Emily Brontë.

Kirklees Hall is located between Hartshead and the nearby village of Clifton.

Robin Hood is buried near Hartshead, although the exact place is not known, as the gravestone has been moved at least 3 times.

[edit] Ghosts

There are many reputed hauntings in this area especially relating to the local public house, The Three Nuns. There are also reputed hauntings related to a public house, The New Inn, which has now been converted into apartments.

Whilst still trading as a pub The New Inn was exorcised on at least one occasion by a local priest whose remarkably objective report of the events makes for compulsive reading. During the late 1990s bar staff (who were unaware of previous activity) reported strange occurrences such as glasses falling onto the floor from the bar after throwing out time. Rumour has it[who?] that the 'spirit' is a child that died there late in the 19th century.

Although many sceptics deny any supernatural activity, there have been several accounts of "freak accidents" in the apartments, few of which resulted in injuries sustained from "floating" objects such as chairs or tables being "thrown" across the room. Records from the apartments show that three out of every four families that move into the apartment building leave after the first month, most for unreported causes. Some residents report seeing people walking down the halls then simply disappear into thin air. Others report feeling a "presence" near their closet doors which coincidentally are made out of wood from the original Inn that once occupied that space.[citation needed]
