The Democratic Party (Portuguese: Partido Democrático) or Democratic Party In Timor-Leste is a social-democratic political party of East Timor, established on June 10, 2001. Currently, most of the members of the party are of the young generation who have been studying abroad and those who have completed their studies in Indonesia, Norway, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

There are various "driven forces" which lead to the establishment of this political party. First, the young generation feels that there will be no democratic change taking place soon if the country falls into the leadership of the old generation, who, they feel, have been more concerned with revenge than with governing the country.

Secondly, the need for balancing power both in the government and in parliament through having the young generation's contribution in all decision making process.

Thirdly, there is great concern about gender disparities and environmental issues which need great attention.

Fourthly, the need to recognize the effort made by all activists who had contributed to the Timorese struggle during the period of occupation. Lastly, the need to fight against corruption, collusion and nepotism in government bureaucracy.

In the parliamentary election held on 30 August 2001, the party won 8.7 % of the popular vote and 7 out of 88 seats. The party is ranked number two in parliament after the FRETILIN (a left wing party).

In the April 2007 presidential election, the party's leader, Fernando "Lasama" de Araújo, took third place with 19.18% of the vote.[1]

According to provisional results, the party won 11.30% of the vote in the June 2007 parliamentary election, placing fourth. Based on the results, the Democratic Party will have eight seats in parliament.[2]
